Apostolic Exhortations are given by the Holy Father, as in the case of Sacramentum Caritatis, which was Pope Benedict’s response to the recommendations set forth by the Fathers of the Synod on the Eucharist.

When you see the term “apostolic”, this usually refers to the Pope. The “Apostolic Nuncio” to a country is the Pope’s representative to that government. For example, we enjoy diplomatic relations with the Vatican. We have an ambassador. For his part, the Pope sends us his “ambassador”, called the “Apostolic Nuncio.” Of course, when a bishop is assigned to another diocese as its ordinary, he remains the “apostolic administrator” of his former diocese until his successor is appointed by the Pope.

It differes from an Encyclical in that Encyclicals are meant to provide deeper insights into certain matters.

An Apostolic Exhortation is meant to encourage us to do things that we should already be doing in the first place.

A motu proprio is not a document type in and of itself, but rather a descriptor attached to a document. For instance, Summorum Pontificum was an Apostolic Letter motu proprio data (“given by his own accord”).
