where would i find the written information that would link a bishop or priest back to a certain apostle? i think it would be neat to know. ive seen one site but it only goes back to the 1500’s.

maize,

As I understand it, in the Western Church (in union with the Pope), a bishop can only be consecrated under the direction of the Pope. So all priests in union with the Pope would be able to “trace” their orders to the bishop who was consecrated by direction of a Pope.

The “genealogy” of the Popes can be found here:
newadvent.org/cathen/12272b.htm

Hope this helps.

thanks for that, i still wonder if they know which apostle they trace back to since the church keeps lots of documentation.

My take on the information in Catholic Hierarchy is that the bottleneck at Cardinal Rebiba means that while he (co)consecrated five bishops, he was consecrated by the traditional three bishops, who were also consecrated by three bishops, but that information has been lost to time. The “family tree” then, would have an hourglass shape.

It is traditional that certain sees link their founding to a particular apostle, but I don’t think that’s exactly what you’re asking.
