I know this is an old post and it is now 5 years since it was started but the subject is even more relevent now than it was then.

I have personally witnessed clapping for the choir, church members on the occasion of an anniversary, priests and deacons on the occasion of an anniversary, school children who put on a “play” during the Mass, people receiving one Sacrament or another, people graduating,
various school functions held in church outside of Mass, various musical performances held in church outside of Mass, etc. etc. etc.

It really is disgusting and upsetting beyond belief. The tabernacle is in plain view. Very few are mindful of the real presence of Jesus in their midst, and the incredible disrespect that is being shown to Him. Church is a place of prayer. Prayer. People talking to God. Church is about God. It is God’s house, it isn’t a meeting hall, an auditorium, a banquet hall. God is being ignored in His own house in favor of man entertaining himself and clapping for man’s milestones, achievements, performances, etc.

This is actually perfectly understandable when the Pope himself sat in the Sanctuary, I want to repeat **IN THE SANCTUARY **of a Church in New York City and held a meet and greet with numerous heretics of various stripes with his back to the tabernacle. I guess you can’t really expect the people to act better than the Holy Father, or can you?

yes, it is awfull. I see it all the time in the RC diocese out here.
you wont catch the orthodox dancing and clapping like the RC do.
I even saw a RC priest do confession in street clothes.

It has been my understanding that applause during Mass is an abuse. Cardinal Ratzinger tolerated it at the funeral Mass for John Paul II and didn’t speak a word of correction. Is it to be allowed at some times and not at others?
I cringe every time our congregation claps for our cantor after the Communion song. She has a beautiful voice but what would be more beautiful is if we could just soak it all in and carry on with mass without feeling obligated in some way to break the flow of mass for inappropriately timed applause. I am in prayer and seems very irreverent to me. Like, great, received God, kneeled for a minute, now back to business of everything else, forgetting what just occurred and the gift they received.
