Applause at Mass

I’m curious. Is your choir located in a choir loft, behind the people, or up front?

Various parishes I’ve attended, when the choir is in the front, they tend to get applause after Mass. When up in the choir loft behind the people, they tend not to get applause.

Personally, I prefer the choir to be located up behind the people, in the choir loft. I met much resistance to this, when I was in a folk group, and they insisted, that we be located in the front, where of course, we always received applause at the end of Mass.

We are in the loft, in the back of the church. And we are good . Even so, I do not like applause at Mass and I am in good company. Cardinal Arinze himself has spoken out against applause at Mass.

Is it my imagination, or is there always a cousin who’s
a “very experienced singer” (karaoke), and understands
the proper role of music at a Catholic wedding (a springboard to fame and fortune) Oh yeah,… and who can’t understand why “The Wind Beneath My Wings” isn’t going to fly. . .

Yep. My wedding information brochure says that we will consider working with a “guest performer” for one or two items at most as long as they are willing to rehearse but a) we do not replace core group members with family members or friends and b) we reserve the right to decline to work with them if we feel the result will not enhance the wedding service. Guess where all that came from? And yes, for some reason, it is pretty much always a cousin … except for when it’s a niece.

We travel all over and it seems spontaneous applause occurs more often when we have to be up the front. It still sometimes happens if we are in a loft but mostly when somebody (cringe) asks the congregation to show their appreciation.
