This poll is not about applause at any place in the Mass prior to the Closing prayer. It is exclusively about applause during the Concluding Rite. For your information, the GIRM provides for “brief announcements, if necessary” and special blessings between the Closing Prayer and Final Blessing.

This poll is not about applauding a homily or any “performance” during the other parts of the Mass (Beginning of the Mass thru the Liturgy of the Eucharist). It is generally recognized this is inappropriate and most likely prohibited except in the rarest of situations. This poll is not about that appropriateness or permissability of these “rarest of situations” if they even exist.

This poll is not about liturgical dance. This poll is not about any other liturgical abuses. This poll is not about music.

For the sake of discussion in this thread and poll, it assumed that such situations are not routine but exceptions for “special occassions”. If this occurs every single week, it is assumed that the Pastor is exercising poor judgment and needs to be more selective of what is “special”.

You will note that this poll doesn’t have an “other” or “it depends” or “in some of the cases” option. The Vatican and USCCB can’t write directives to cover every potential situation but either must prohibit them universally or allow for the prudential discretion of the Bishop or Priest. If such allowance for Clerical prudential discretion is allowed it is recognized (not condoned) that this may result in some scenarios that are inappropriate or poor judgment.

If you pick the last option, it is assumed that the blessing or acknowledgement will be done in the parish hall. If the parish has no hall, it will take place after the Celebrant and servers have processed from the church. If there logistical problems related to this scenario (i.e. an immediately subsequent Mass), we will assume that the Pastor can be creative or it may have to be suspensed.

This poll is about what is the appropriate response of the congregation and/or if they should be prohibited universally. In America, applause is a means for a group to express respect, appreciation, and affection.

Scenario 1: After the Ordination of a Bishop or Archbishop and the Closing Prayer, the newly ordained is allowed to say a few words to the Congregation. At the end of the remarks, the Congregation responds with polite applause or silence.

Scenario 2: After the Liturgy of the Eucharist celebrated by the Bishop and the Closing Prayer, he calls the newly confirmed to the front of the altar and gives them all a blessing. The Congregation responds with polite applause or silence.

Scenario 3: After the Liturgy of the Eucharist celebrated by the Pastor and the Closing Prayer, he calls the 1st Communicants to the front of the altar and gives them all a blessing. The Congregation responds with polite applause or silence.

Scenario 4: After the Liturgy of the Eucharist celebrated by the Pastor and the Closing Prayer, he calls a couple celebrating their 50th anniversary to the front of the altar or has them stand in their pew and gives them a blessing. The Congregation responds with polite applause or silence.

Scenario 5: After the Liturgy of the Eucharist celebrated by the Pastor and the Closing Prayer and during the Announcements, the Pastor notes that today (this week) is a milestone anniversary of either the Deacon’s or Associate Pastor’s ordination. The Congregation responds with politie applause or silence.

For your information, there is a thread about Clapping during Mass that was vigorously debated previously. Nearly every argument that I can imagine was posted there. I encourage you to read that if you’d like.

I apologize for the fact that there are two “threads” that don’t include the poll. it was my first time posting such a thing and I guess I screwed up. PM me if you know how to get a thread deleted.

The debate is continuing on the thread that doesn’t include the poll. Maybe we could move it here. Or maybe this is an issue that Buffalo, paramedic, mrs, fix, maria, yingyang and I all got out of shape over an issue that everyone considers silly. Anyway, I’m bumping it to see if this was a total waste of time yesterday. 😃

Unfortunately, we cannot add the poll to the existing thread! That would solve everything. I have voted in the poll, but it is hard to pick up and move after getting so well acquainted in the other thread! 😃

Had we not rediscovered our charity, the other thread would have probably been closed by now and we would all be here! (Now don’t get any ideas :tsktsk: )

The thread is being closed – basically a duplicate of an existing discussion already on the board.
