Hi everyone,
Am wondering when others feel is an appropriate age for children who have received First communion to receive the blood of Christ in addition to body of Christ when receiving communion?

When they ask for it. 🙂

My First Communion was about 7 or 8 years old. It was expected, especially at First Communion, that you would receive under both species. If they’re old enough for Communion, then by definition they’re old enough to receive both the Body and Blood. In the Eastern Catholic Churches, First Communion is given to infants, including the Host soaked in a tiny amount of the Precious Blood. It’s a non-issue for most.

Just for the record, receiving both is a fuller SIGN, it is not a ‘full communion’ as though receiving only ONE species is ‘lesser communion.’

I think you’re a little mistaken here. To receive both species is no fuller a communion than if one simply receives one. He who receives one receives both. In the old Mass, the celebrating priest receives only from the chalice, and the other ministers and laity receive only the host. No one would ever say that anyone at the Mass has received an incomplete communion.

God bless.

At First Communion we receive the body, blood, soul and divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ. We never receive more or less again in our lives.

“O Sacrament most holy!
O Sacrament Divine!
All praise and all thanksgiving
Be every moment Thine.”
