Appropriate daily Mass dress?

I think you are supposed to dress up nicely for Mass. On Sundays I wear a suit and tie. However, I also go to the daily Masses quite often. What do you think is appropriate to wear on these days? Should you dress up in a suit and tie every time you go to Mass?

Wouldn’t it depend on your activities before/after Mass? On Sunday, the day of rest, people generally aren’t doing anything before or after so they can dress in their finest…During the week, though, a person might have to go straight to work, or like the groundskeepers at my church, who start working before Mass (in their “cowboy” clothes and hats and boots), they go to Mass in those same clothes, and then continue on with their work afterward. On the other hand, though, even their “work” clothes aren’t slovenly.

I’ve gone to weekday Mass both in work clothes and Sunday clothes or the in between, business casual.

most people at daily Mass are on their way to (or coming home from) their job or daily duties at home or elsewhere, so they would dress for that activity. So you might see someone in a nurse or police uniform, in work overalls and steel toed shoes, or in mommy jeans. As long as it is modest and as clean as possible under the circumstances it would be fine.

Agreeing with everyone else. Folks at daily Mass are usually on their way to work or on a lunch break. They are dressed for the other activities of their day. I’ve seen work clothes (scrubs, lawn service uniforms, one gentleman who is always in a flight suit), office clothes (even suits and ties), and the ordinary clothes worn by retired folk, moms, those who have the day off, etc.

The true minimum is: modest, inoffensive in message, clean, and, if possible, in good repair. If I see somebody in less than that, though, well, sometimes we just needed to go to Mass and we are wearing what we have. I’m one of the people who have to vacuum the church, and I’d vacuum up mud after somebody who felt a need to be there, muddy shoes and all. Just because it isn’t a day of obligation doesn’t mean someone doesn’t have an inner need. So even the “minimum” standards are applicable only for judging yourself and children under your authority, just like on Sundays.

Local standards seem to be about the same as standards for local schools workplaces. It isn’t that work or school wear is the standard, so much as work and school standards tend to be about right in terms of fostering the sense that serious work being undertaken. If your school or workplace(!) allows clothes that let your midriff show, though, the general standards of modesty would still apply.

Yes, but some people want to know how others show what is in their heart. It isn’t out of place to want to choose clothes to show that you don’t take the Mass for granted. Having the discussion doesn’t mean those in the discussion are setting the standard for the rest of Christendom. It just means they care about their choices.

this is a good question,

I am a lector for day masses ( and I am a new lector) recently we got a new Priest, I normally wear almost ankle length capris with a nice top nothing showing, He told me its not acceptable for lectoring at day mass. I wasn’t to happy I don’t see Jesus in this new Priest at all. I think hes there for organization of everyone and yes our church needs this, but I can’t and wont wear a dress for 30 minutes I am not there to look good, I am there to worship and serve Christ,

Jesus says come as you are, and i will make fishermen out of you, Hmm he gives this a whole new meaning. for day masses. I go to mass to server Christ NOT the priest or the people. They can’t save my soul only christ can.

tomorrow morning i will be wearing pants and top, I can’t wait to hear his remarks.

Did he ask you to wear a dress? or just be a bit more dressed up? You could easily wear a nice pair of slacks and top if he’s just looking for something a bit less casual.

When we have lectors for daily Mass they seem to be obviously wearing what will be their clothes for the day. That is, I’ve seen outfits like you describe your regular wear and nobody blinks. This is especially true at the 9am Mass which doesn’t get too many office-goers. have never seen anyone at Mass or serving Mass who is less than clean, neat, and modest, but not everyone is dressed formally.

I would not make this issue one to fight Father over. Ask him if dressier slacks are ok. If he insists on a dress, then you’ll have to decide if lectoring at daily Mass is worth that, but don’t quit in a huff. You should still be able to attend daily Mass, even if you don’t read.

Christ did not command us to serve him and the heck with everybody else! That is not what we learned when we learned Christ!

“*To the person who strikes you on one cheek, offer the other one as well, and from the person who takes your cloak, do not withhold even your tunic. Give to everyone who asks of you, and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you. For if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? What reason is there to deny the priest’s request? Isn’t safeguarding the sanctity of the Mass his duty? Why make life hard for him? If you can’t comply with his request, that is one thing, but otherwise, why not do as he asks? How will it hurt you? These are just questions to ask yourself. If you have reasons, then talk them over with your pastor before deciding that you can’t find a way to submit to what he’s after. Pursue a peaceable and docile response first, try to find a compromise, and see what happens.

In 45 minutes I will be leaving for a Tridentine Missa Cantata (sung traditional high mass). Air temp is about 92F right now. I’m not there to look good or save your soul. I will be wearing dress shoes, slacks, shirt, tie, sport jacket. Hope they let me in. See you there A-Dub?

I wish I could go. I don’t have a ride.
But see, the difference is, this is Southern California man. I’d rather you dress appropriately for the weather than have you sweating right next to me! But hey dude, tell me how it went. I really wanted to go, but my parents wouldn’t be willing to take me all the way to Perris just for some “Mass”. Man, I’m so bummed I couldn’t get there. Professional choir, FSSP priest…MAN!

Woah. I feel that you should not be disobedient to the Father. If he asks for too much, big deal. Don’t lector. Lectoring is not your right. It is a privilege.
