Appropriate Fabric and Trim for The Large Altar Cloth

I have been asked to make the new altar cloth for the dedication of our new church. I am very honored to fulfill this request and want to be sure I am correct in the choosing of fabric and trim for this altar cloth. I have looked at two weights of white linen (one is almost handkerchief thin and the other is medium weight linen). Can someone tell me if I am on the right track or should I be looking for something that is easy to launder? Also, I have seen some very pretty white crocheted lace about one inch wide which I am considering using as trim on the lengthwise front of the cloth. Please tell me if this sounds acceptable. I want to be within the Church guidelines.

Linen is appropriate but nothing too thin. Thinner fabric tends to slide around. The lace is a nice idea but whatever your choice it is important to know how the cloth is going to be laundered and if it will shrink. I know in our parish the altar cloths are machine washed by the rectory housekeepers.
 
Your plan sounds beautiful! Please do make it out of the heavy-wieght linen. Linen is the traditional fabric choice since Christ’s body was wrapped in linen in the tomb. It will also be so crisp and lovely on the altar.

For the fair linen, I prefer the Belgian Linen. It is a beautiful heavy linen and looks crisp and lovely on the altar. It also lasts a very long time. We have 3 of them at our Parish. They do not have any lace on them. We also sometimes use Altar Covers which are more ornate and place the fair linen over the altar covers. Your idea sounds wonderful. I am sure it will be beautiful.
