Hello everyone,

I was wondering what your personal opinions were about the sort of music, books, TV shows, and movies that are spiritually okay to view. I know of the obvious ones we should avoid (for example, erotic novels, a majority of explicit music, etc.), but I was wondering what you guys think is okay to view.

🍿

I’d start with Psalms. You can almost stop there and be happy…

  1. Music. I can’t think of anything contemporary. I would look at music recorded before 1968. And, of course, the masters like Mozart, Wagner and Beethoven. It’s pleasant and a joy to listen to.
  2. Books, even historical non-fiction, have been adding totally gratuitous sexual references and descriptions for a while now. Again, I would look at pre-1968 books, excluding those with tawdry, lewd and suggestive content. Of course, there are contemporary books about Catholic living and similar that are good spiritually.
  3. TV shows dating from 1968 and earlier had characters that one could relate to, especially if you are a Christian.
  4. Movies from 1964 and earlier for fun, true love, true romance and adventure without the graphic qualities of too many movies today. Avoid the J.D. films from the 1950s which received little exposure. J.D. meaning Juvenile Delinquent. Rebel Without a Cause (1955), A Streetcar Named Desire (1951), and The Wild One (1953) can be described as not spiritually uplifting.
Hope this helps,
Ed

I would say books from 1962 are the best. I have one particular book in mind.

Also from before 1968:

“Velvet Underground & Nico” (1967) - awesome album, recently reissued
The Monks’ “Black Monk Time” (1966) - legendary garage rock album
Frank Zappa’s “Essential Gravy” (1967) - classic avant garde jazz album
Pink Floyd’s “Piper At The Gates” (1967) - the only Pink Floyd album that matters
The Rolling Stones’ “December’s Children” (1965) - still my favorite Stones album 👍

Thank you to everyone with your replies! I definitely find the older sort of media to be more enjoyable than today. 🙂
