I am sheduled for surgery tomorrow. I plan on going to mass before surgery (it’s at noon, and the mass is at 9am). I can’t have any solid foods after midnight, but I can have clear liquids until 3 hours before the surgery. I want to take the Eucharist tomorrow, and I know Christ is present in both, and that people can take the host without taking the wine. Is is acceptable to take the wine and not the host?

Thanks, and God Bless!

Yes, it’s acceptable. You might want to speak with the priest beforehand to avoid any misunderstandings. Also, the priest might give you the smallest possible “piece” of a Host which would not affect the medical requirement to avoid solid foods. That would actually be the better option.

yes it is acceptable, but I would speak to the priest before Mass so he is not confused. if the EMHC looks puzzled or balks, just whisper “I am on a medical liquid diet”

Thanks to everyone for their replies! I don’t see that what constitues a “bite” (or less than) could do harm… Mass starts a 9:00, so I would receive it at about 9:30. I don’t even have to be at the surgery center until noon, and on an empty stomach, I would think that it would be digested by that time.

you could also just ask your doctor of receiving communion will be an impediment to your surgery

Exactly - alcohol could possibly interfere with the anaesthetic or other medications. And ask about having a very small piece of the Host instead, which may indeed turn out to be the only possibility.

You only have to take a sip of the Precious Blood, it would not be enough to interfere with anything. But a small piece of the Host which will dissolve in minutes shouldn’t affect anything either.

Well, wouldn’t hurt to ask to make absolutely sure.

I was told by the surgeon’s nurse that a sip of wine, as long as it isn’t RIGHT before surgery (ie, within an hour), would be alright. I would like to receive both, even though I know it isn’t a requirement, and that there is nothing wrong with receiving one and not the other. That is just my preference, though.

God Bless!
