Approved condom use

When I was in high school our religion teacher told us once that the Catholic Bishops had said it was okay for married couple to use artificial birth control A) if a pregnancy poses a health risk to the woman, B) if not using condoms would damage the relationship, C) if the couple really couldn’t (were unable to) use NFP. Since then I’ve learn enough I’m pretty sure he was wrong, but does anyone know where these ideas may have come from? Was there anything that might have been misinterpreted like that? I am kinda confused how he got this information.

That is totally wrong.
Use of condoms is forbidden. They cannot be used to prevent pregnancy and they cannot be used to prevent disease.

I did hear that the use of contraception was highly debated and a LOT of bishops wanted the use of condoms to be approved by the church in the 60’s.

I believe that the Bishops presented recommendations to the then Pope recommending approval of barrier methods of contraception but that this was one step too far and the Pope rejected the recommendations, as was his right as Vicar of Christ.

I don’t think it was ever expressed infallibly though (such things are specific to the Deposit of Faith, such as the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, rather than temporal laws) so it could change in the future - which is not to say that it will change, of course!

It could be that some Catholic Bishops have said as much, but certainly not as a group and more certainly such would be contrary to Catholic Moral Theology.

Nope. Not the Teaching of the Church…and not the truth…the person must have been very misinformed …
