The importance of the Gospel of St. Mark lies in the fact that it is the first of the four canonical Gospels to be written. Though it is the shortest of the Gospels, its importance cannot be measured by the number of pages it takes up in the Christian Scriptures. St. Matthew and St. Luke both knew the Gospel of St. Mark and used it as the basis for their gospels. (from Cusa, an Apostolate)
It is the wellspring of all the Gospels. Mark invented the Gospel. The others imitated it and Matthew and Luke in particular even took material from it from it.

Was this the same Mark - that Paul - didn’t want to take - on his missionary journey ?

–from the article on Saint Mark in HolySpiritinteractive:
“While still young, Mark went with the two great saints, Paul and Barnabas, on a missionary journey to bring the teachings of Jesus to new lands. Before the journey was over, though, Mark seems to have had a disagreement with St. Paul. Mark suddenly returned to Jerusalem. Paul and Mark later worked out their differences. In fact, Paul wrote from prison in Rome that Mark came to console and help him.”
