Why are there so many different archangels?
I’ve heard of the three from the bible but I went online and I saw alot unheard of
Uriel
Chamuel
Raguel
Jeremiel
Jophiel
What is all these strange names? also saw Uriel as Nuriel .

My understanding is that there’s **billions **of archangels, as there are billions of most of the other choirs, Seraphim aside. I don’t have documentation for this, but I’m almost positive this can be argued from St. Thomas. Perhaps others can be more helpful in documenting this claim, which I think is quite common.

Also, I really wouldn’t think it prudent to look for names of archangels online. We definitely know only three names: the other names one might find may or may not be archangels that are in point of fact fallen, and whose names are known to us from exorcists. Naming them in certain contexts gives them a certain glory, and that’s a definite no-no.

So its more then likely those that I’ve named have fallen with satan .

God is not a minamlist. He is very lavish and generous. The number of souls he required to create is zero, yet they are being created by the billions. The choirs of angels also presumably are beyone counting.

A lot of it depends on the Jewish tradition one is reading from …There are millions of angles. Many whose names we won’t ever know till we reach Heaven . One can read the book of Enoch and see angels not mentioned in the Canocial Bible …Each name that the angel is given is meaningful to it’s assignment wordplay if you want to use the term . Just because which angels to know who are from God and who are the fallen… Say for instance the so called angel of the Mormons Moroni is a fallen angel because it preaches a different gospel . I hope this helps

Well mormons claim that Moroni told Joseph Smith to translate the book of mormon to english I believe that is wrong just like I believe that Jesus didn’t come to America after he rose from the dead.

I was always taught at the St. Raphael’s Roman Catholic School and Parish I attended that God Almighty has three Archangels:

St. Michael the Archangel was “the Angel of the Lord” who God sent to Moses and Jacob and Abraham and among others throughout history.
Michael is the definder of Jesus Christ in his Sacred Humanity. Michael is highly revered by Catholic tradition and liturgy as the Protector of the Church, as once, he was regarded as the Protector of the Israelites.

St. Gabriel the Archangel is the messenger to the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Mystery of the Annunciation/Incarnation.

St. Raphael the Archangel appeared to Tobias.

In the Latin Church, only three angels are named. Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. The Eastern Churches also identify Uriel. Naming other angels, including guardians, is discouraged by the Church.
Yes, indeed. Well said.👍

I still say this prayer to my Guardian Angel every day/night.

Guardian Angel Prayer
Angel of God, my Guardian dear,
to whom God’s love commits me here
ever this day/night be at my side,
to light, to guard, to rule and to guide.
Amen.

I am not going to stop saying this prayer as I was raised by both of my parents who were devout Roman Catholics all their lives.

I know about the 3 in the catholic bible I was just curious about where the others came from and in the bible that I have for now it says there are 7 spirits I know there are nine choirs but besides Michael Gabriel and Raphael are the others just assumptions made by people ?

There are a multitude of angels in each of the Angelic “choirs”.
There are three Archangels named in Scripture.
That doesn’t mean that they are the only three. No one knows exactly how many there are in total. It’s pointless to speculate about it. Other faith traditions mention others.
Archangels deliver messages to mankind of worldwide importance…salvific news, if you will. They are considered Saints by “acclamation” of the early church.

Most guides to angels lack an Imprimatur and Nihil Obstat by Church authorities, and some even document occult and demonic practices. Not all angels are good. Various sects and individuals have thought up names for angels over the years. These are not part of Divine Revelation, and the Church discourages the practice for good reasons.

I suggest that you stick to reading trustworthy sources for information on angels. St. Thomas Aquinas is going to be your ideal author.

St. Thomas Aquinas speculated about it quite piously, reviewing the work of Plato, Aristotle and Maimonides. I really wish, clare, that you would keep your opinions of saints to yourself, because this is the second time you’ve been proven wrong about what saintly activities they get around to, such as talking about Protestants.

Yeah, avoid anything non-canon when you go to look at the angels. Stick with St. Thomas Aquinas and a few other saints who wrote about the angels.

The only three of the seven who are named are Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. Certain other books (non-inspired) list other angels, but these books are not recommended for the faithful by the Church, so you may as well ignore them for the most part.

Because Raphael says that he is “one of the seven who stand ready before the Lord,” in the book of Tobit, this is not an assumption, rather, this is the actual word of God.

I am not proven wrong.
There is no “accounting of angels”. Exactly how many are there???
It’s a public forum.
You are not permitted to talk about people directly.
Reported.
And you are BACK on IGNORE.

I am having a hard time seeing where Clare is “proven wrong,” since she clearly indicated that there may be more than only three.

The link you provided from Aquinas also stated the same thing:
A3: How many angels are there; only a few or many? After reviewing the approaches of Plato, Aristotle and Maimonides to this question, Aquinas comes down on the side of “many”. Not only does scripture appear to support this position, but one might argue that God would produce more things of a more perfect nature in creation.

It looks to me like you both say the same thing. 🤷 If so, why the denigrating retort to Clare about being “proven wrong?”

Furthermore, she is correct that the Church ascribes the names of the Archangels, as Saint Michael, Saint Raphael, and Saint Gabriel. We celebrate them on their own feast day on September. 29. Any breviary will specify the word Saint for these three as does the USCCB website for the Feast Day.

I still say this prayer too. It has remained a favorite of mine since childhood. 🙂

 This is a good, Church-approved prayer. Why would you indicate that you should stop saying it?
