Archbishiop Prendergast: No Meat on Fridays for Lent

At my church we have Lenten Seafood Dinners every Friday night - it is a great fundraiser for us – lots of work preparing all the seafood and side dishes but everyone enjoys the food and getting to together to relax and talk. I try hard not to eat meat on all Fridays - there are times when I do have meat such as when traveling or eating at someone’s house but I find it easy to do all year. My church is in the lower part of St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana so we have the best seafood around which makes seafood dinners at Lent an easy fundraiser. We love our seafood in SE Louisiana.

When the new Code of Canon Law was promulgated our conference of bishops decreed that the only days of abstinence from meat were Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. That decree was accepted by Rome.

In the Pastoral Notes of the ORDO (there is only one ORDO for all of Canada, unlike in the US where there are many such) it is suggested that we abstain from meat on Lenten Fridays but that has never been mentioned in the bulletins or from the ambo in any of the parishes where I’ve been in the last 29 years. The one time I put it in our own bulletin I was chastised by the Sister who was the parish administrator, “That’s been done away with!”

Not so. Each conference was allowed to set its own rules and this is the CCCB’s decree
Decree No. 8
In accordance with the prescriptions of c. 1253, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops hereby decrees that the days of fast and abstinence in Canada are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

Fridays are days of abstinence but Catholics may substitute special acts of charity or piety on this day.

Yeah, on Fridays if you performed an act of charity, you could eat meat (spoiler alert; I didn’t eat meat anyway).

His Grace is a good friend of tradition, you guys would like him. He found a new home for the FSSP, their previous building would have cost a small fortune to fix. One of our Basilicas has the EF during Lent.

He also does things like canceling speakers and denying faculties to less than reputable speakers.

Oh, I forgot to add the “SJ” in his name. His Grace is a Jesuit.

Although he obviously still supports Development and Peace, which has been denounced by a couple of bishops for funding organizations that support abortion.

I thought not eating meat on Fridays during Lent is a requirement by Canon Law, even in Canada?? I was away from the Church for ten years. Did I miss something in which this changed?? Maybe that’s why my parish is serving meat on a Friday??

He makes sure the money goes to specific portions of D&P that don’t support abortion. He’s let be known to D&P they’re on thin ice.

I figured the concept of a legit orthodox Jesuit would cause your mind to get blown further. That’s why you see me defending the Jesuits; I know of several solid ones, and here’s proof that there’s good ones. 👍
