Now let’s accept that there was a conspiracy and that a priest(powerful secretary, not just a note taker) and a hand full of sneaky Bishops foisted this radical new Mass on the world. Where were the rest of the Bishops and Cardinals? The only clerical outcry, as I recall were some of those in the curia and Le Fevere (sic) and he was more or less unhappy with the whole kettle of fish and not just the new Mass. These roll-over-and-accept Bishops were for the most part if not totally appointed before the Council. Hardly a murmur even from some of the best.
Maybe Paul VI’s “Smoke of Satan” speech had some ground to stand on after all.

Alex,

Does it matter which publisher you buy it from? I ask that as some publishers will modify what the author is trying to write. I read the write up for it on Liturgical Press and it doesn’t seem to take a more harder stance on this than what you are.

Thanks so much for this book alert. I’d heard of it but now i might even read it. How fascinating this sounds!

Also a telling book recently released is Piero Marini’s “A Challenging Reform”. I’ve read a few reviews on it and he describes the challenges of foisting the changes on the Church.

In some reveiws, we are told that he is confused on some facts and some obvious dates too - but in general, its a book that describes what these guys were up to.

Marini [the former Mass Master of Ceremonies] wrote it as a description of his struggles over the past twenty years, but reading between the lines, you might get the impression that he is bragging about wrecking the Church.

Don’t confuse Piero Marini with his new replacement Guido Marini, the new Master of Ceremonies who is responsilbe for creating more reverent Papal Masses both at the Vatican and abroad.

I haven’t read it yet!

Piero was Annibale’s secretary. No big shock there. The fact Piero remained a powerful liturgy figure for so long under JPII explains much…sadly, for JPII liturgy was not a major concern.

Not sure I’d go so far as to agree that JPII didn’t value the liturgy. I HEAR he did try to make changes. My understanding is that JPII was completely flummoxed by the Vatican bureaucracy and could not defeat it. So he just took off and traveled, going straight to the people.

But I get what you are saying… not much changed under JPII!

Pope Benedict XVI having spent years at the Vatican knows much better how to work the bureaucracy and has obviously made great strides in identifying the spiders in the middle of the webs.

Thanks, I did get confused. You know, all them Italians look alike to a square headed German.

If you are wondering about how future generations will view Archbishop Bugnini, just ask Eastern Christians how they view Emperor Leo III…
