A Jesuit university in Nebraska has announced that it will offer benefits to same-sex spouses of employees who have been legally married in other states."I asked myself, what would …

Creighton should not be allowed to call itself catholic. I had two relatives go there for college…after they graduated, they were no longer Catholic!

What would Jesus do? He would not offer benefits for mortal sin

Again…he ATE with sinners…he did not say “continue your sins” he said “go and sin no more”

Totally agree with these statements. Thank you Bishop for speaking the truth. We can only hope all benefactors of Creighton remove their support at once. We all need to pray for our Catholic schools and universities. Pray for educators who are strong in the faith to seek employment in Catholic Education system.

Sweet ****, not here, too. facepalm

Thank God for Archbishop Lucas. What would we do without him? He is such a good bishop, and most of the priests of this archdiocese are at least decently orthodox besides being compassionate.

On another note, maybe I’m glad my dad (may he rest in peace) died before he could get me and my sister free ride into Creighton.

I think hoping for this would probably be about as effective as wishing to be an Oscar Meyer wiener.

Amen. St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Augustine, St. Robert Bellarmine, St. Ignatius of Loyola, Pope St. John Paul II - please pray for the Jesuit universities. They’ve gotten entirely out of hand and are beginning to harden their hearts to the truths God gave to us, and to you. It’s very annoying and depressing. Help us who have to cope with such as this. And thank you for giving us good pastors like Archbishop Lucas (bonus for giving him such a cool name - George Lucas) who defend the truth.

Some of our “Catholic” universities and other institutions need to meditate on:
14* "And to the angel of the church in La-odicea write: 'The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God’s creation. 15 "'I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were cold or hot! 16 So, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew you out of my mouth. 17* For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing; not knowing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.
Revelation 3:14-17

I was so disappointed when I read about it (of course, I first heard about it from a Facebook friend praising Creighton for their decision). They say it’s not about supporting same-sex marriage, but that’s what it looks like (at the very least, appearing to give some sort of legitimacy to the situation).

I’m grateful Archbishop Lucas voiced his concern and I hope that he will be unwavering in this and all similar issues in the future.

There were ways the university could have extended benefits without condoning gay marriage.

Why doesn’t a Catholic university just hire those who adhere to Catholic moral principles?

Why doesn’t a Catholic university just hire those who adhere to Catholic moral principles?
The same reason teenagers follow the popular fads; they don’t want the secular universities to look down on them for being out of step with the times.

Perhaps when they need a professor to fill a position, they cannot always find a qualified professor who also adheres to Catholic moral principles.

.
Then I must conclude that Catholic universities are not doing their job of educating qualified Catholic professors. With all the Catholic institutions of higher learning that we have, there should be plenty of qualified Catholic professors!

This only serves to point out what a cancer a so-called Catholic University is on society in general and especially within the Church. Those educated within the walls of such corrupted institutions attend and lose their own faith in the process. We must be vigilant and expose such violations wherever we find them, use our voices, pens, fingertips, pages to spread the Gospel and educate parents about such ‘so called Catholic’ universities so their student rolls will diminish, effectively shutting them down. Spread the word in whatever means you have at your disposal. And Pray!

So if the child or partner of a same sex married employee develops cancer they should be denied health care?

Well, if it’s wrong to give benefits to people who are sinning then NO ONE should be getting health insurance. (Because last I checked the Church teaches we’re all sinners.)

On another note, if it’s only wrong to give benefits to people who are committing sins related to marriage, then any married couples who are Catholic who are not married in the Church or who are divorced and remarried should also not be receiving benefits. This means the janitors, professors, secretaries, cafeteria ladies…we should investigate what kinds of sins they’re committing before we give them health benefits…otherwise, if we’re only going to exclude homosexuals … I mean, if that isn’t the definition of singling a group out because we just like them less then I don’t know what is.

What? So the University of Notre Dame is a cancer on society?

There’s no sin in providing health insurance or health care. The problem is in recognizing same sex marriage as the equivalent of actual marriage. It is not. Perhaps rather than recognize spouses for the purposes of health coverage, the institution should simply allow the employee to designate any other person whom he or she wishes to include in the coverage.

To equate homosexual “marriage” with all other sins is facile, at best. It is an intrinsic evil, not the same as spitting on the sidewalk. Jesuits used to pride themselves on logic and clear, rational thinking. Now, they go with whatever is easy and feels good.

When our son was planning to go to college, he applied to Creighton, was interviewed and awarded a scholarship. He is a science major but we wanted to be sure he got an intelligent education in the liberal arts, not the clueless foolishness easily obtained in secular schools. We turned their offer down and told them it was because we did some research and concluded they were a “faux-Catholic” institution. Of course, we told them this in more detail than that and cited, among other things, their theology faculty’s run-in with the Church. He is a senior now at a loyal and very high quality Catholic college.

I am sure our action was barely a blip for them on their road to perdition. But, of course, it is a wide and very smooth road with a lot of very happy folks to keep them company. This action by Creighton will be flouted as a badge of distinction to a great many people, both Catholic and non-Catholic. It will show they are not under the thumb of the Church. How sad. What did Satan offer our Lord? Fame, fortune, worship, popularity, you name it, just bow down to me.

Does the university also extend benefits to couples in an illicit second marriage? If so, why hasn’t the Archbishops spoken up before? Or has he?

This is the alternative I was speaking of.

He probably hasn’t.

A business can also insure only the person working and dependent children. That would be simple enough. Where I work, we can insure a spouse, but we pay 100% of the premium. Under that paradigm, there is nothing wrong with allowing the insuring of one other non-child; spouse, parent or roommate.
