Very interesting. There was an article in Crux in which John Allen claimed that the Archbishop did not know about the visit - I’m guessing that’s where the first report came from. That claim that he wouldn’t have been informed sounded strange to me. Not impossible, but unusual that the Archbishop wouldn’t be informed that the President was visiting the shrine. It just makes his statement seem all the more regrettable.

I used to handle scheduling at my former job. If the Archbishop had something scheduled at Catholic University, the invitation to appear at the shrine might not have even gotten to him, and the person in charge of scheduling prepared the correspondence.

He might not have had it in mind when he spoke.

Honestly, how many here remember the particulars of a declined invitation?

Catholic News Agency states the following in this article linked below however:

"In correspondence dated May 30th and obtained by CNA, Gregory’s office declined “the kind invitation to attend the event celebrating International Religious Freedom on Tuesday, June 2, 2020 at the Saint John Paul II Shrine.“

The correspondence further stated that the archbishop had “a prior commitment on his schedule at Catholic University and unfortunately must decline,” and added that Gregory had personally conveyed his regrets at being unable to attend when he spoke to a member of the White House staff directly on the evening of Friday, May 29. Yeah, invites from the leader of the free world are a dime a dozen - they probably all run together. Between that and keeping track of the after-Mass coffee and donut schedule, I can see why he’d forget something from 3 days earlier.
