Archbishop Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales will be writing in The Times (UK) next week to rebutt the claims made by Stephen Hawking in his new book that God is not necessary and did not create the universe.

For a change, major religious leaders of the main faiths of Roman Catholicism, Anglicans, Jewish and Muslim in the UK spoke with one voice.

Unfortunately if anyone wants to read Archbishop Nichols in the on-line version next week, they will need to subscribe, but it’s only £1 for a one-month trial so might be worth that for those who cannot get hold of a newspaper.

In the meantime, here is a comprehensive article from the Daily Mail newspaper and a rebuttal by Christian scientist, Professor Lennox of Oxford University, Professor of Mathematics and Fellow in Mathematics and Philosophy of Science.

I am really keen to read what Archbishop Nichols says next week, he is a superb Catholic leader and thinker (just MHO)

I have only read excerpts of Hawking’s new book, but my understanding is that he said that the prime mover argument was not a proof of God - that God was not logically necessary to have started the universe. I don’t believe he said that God did not start the universe, simply that he thinks science refutes the prime mover argument. I don’t know what Hawking’s personal beliefs are–some things he says suggest he may be an atheist, but I understand that he has been careful in the past to avoid denying the existence of God.
