This article is from the Daily Mail. It could just be sensationalistic re-writing of Dr. William’s original letter, but after reading the full article and knowing what he has said about Islam in the past, I doubt it.
Christian doctrine is offensive to Muslims, the Archbishop of Canterbury said yesterday.
Dr Rowan Williams also criticised Christianity’s history for its violence, its use of harsh punishments and its betrayal of its peaceful principles.
His comments came in a highly conciliatory letter to Islamic leaders calling for an alliance between the two faiths for ‘the common good’.

No wonder the Anglican Communion is self-destructing. I couldn’t help but compare his comments with those of Pope John Paul II. When JP2 apologized for actions by the Church, he apologized for the actions while defending the truths of Christianity. The Archbishop sounds as if he is apologizing for Christianity itself, as if violence is an inherent (but unwanted) part of Christianity. While the Archbishop said the Christian belief in the Trinity ‘is difficult, sometimes offensive, to Muslims’, JP2 would (and did) say things like “Muslims reject the Christian belief in the Trinity” (i.e., a statement of fact without judgement) or “While Christian belief in a Triune God is not accepted by Muslims, our shared belief in a Supreme God can be a source of working together on common issues such as poverty.”

In short, Dr. Williams seems less like a shepherd defending his flock and more like a shepherd concerned with ensuring his flock does not offend the wolves surrounding it.

Well, Christian doctrine is offensive to Muslims. That’s just a fact of life. Muslims do not believe that Jesus is Divine. They do not believe in the relational aspects of God and the Trinity. These core Christian doctrines are offensive to them.

If it weren’t they’d stop being followers of Islam and become Christain. 🤷

I think the “Anglican Communion” is offensive to Christianity

1 Pet. 2:7-8: So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” and “A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.” They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.

The Anglican Church is mere Catholic lite

It has the same amount of sin but with less guilt and athority

History and tradition is also offensive to muslims because they don’t believe Jesus was crucified (see and Qur’an 4:157).

The Archdruid of Canterbury is very sad indeed.
So are all the people on this forum that feel the need to say things like this because it somehow helps validate their own beliefs. I’m not meaning this to go towards you personally jay29, as it is the same thing that goes one with several posters on this forum.

While I don’t agree with today’s version of the church of england, or pretty much any of the protestant churches, I do at least let them be without having to be offensive towards them. When I joined this site 2-3 years ago, I had very high hopes, but it’s really gone downhill for me in the last year with post after post of attacks toward other faiths.

I know Catholics get attacked just as much or more, but Catholics still do the same thing they want protestants to stop doing, which is attacking them.

It’s been fun at times, but I’m about finished with the site. Between this and people taking bets and being happy hoping the Anglican Communion falls so they can say “see, told you Rome was right”, I"m sick of reading it.

The non-Catholic forums is almost exclusively a place for high horse Catholics to “prove” everyone else wrong. Just look at the main non-Catholic page. The first 10 threads are about why we are right and everyone else is wrong.

Lastly, forgot to add this in my last post, and it was actually on topic, anyone who did not read the full article linked above and just went on the quote taken from it should be ashamed and it shows that they are okay with being ingnorant.

If it makes you feel any better Pope Benedict prayed for the Anglican church…I don’t think he is happy at all over it and neither should we be

emphasis mine]
As long as we are talking about the “why” then I think it is all healthy.

I see what you are saying but this man is the head bishop of the Church of England. He is a representative of Christianity yet he is willing to deny the ground of the faith. He seems like a wolf in sheeps clothing to me.

I agree with you though regarding the underlying hope which it seems some have that the Anglicans will simply fall apart. People should wish that they grow in faith and hopefully eventually there will be communion with Rome.

Accusations as serious as that need to be supported by very solid evidence - so what is it, please ?

They certainly aren’t supported by the quotations from the article in post 1

Have you ever read any of these allegedly controversial statements of his in context–i.e., the actual speech or article in its entirety? If you haven’t, then you are in no position to comment on what he has said about Islam. If you only know what the media have said on the subject, you know less than nothing.

Come on–do you trust the media when they report on what the Pope says?

Of course Christian doctrine is offensive to Muslims. There is nothing wrong with saying that. This is simply the sort of thing you have to say at the start of a conversation–you have to demonstrate that you know that some of what you believe is going to upset the other party. It doesn’t indicate the slightest shred of willingness to back down from these “offensive” beliefs.

Jimmy, what “ground of the faith” has ++Rowan abandoned?

Being rude to Muslims is not the ground of our faith. The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the ground of our faith. And if you knew anything about ++Rowan’s beliefs, you’d know that he hasn’t abandoned that. Of course, you may have some other Gospel which is not based on the resurrection of Jesus Christ. I’m sorry for you if this is the case.

Edwin

It appears to me he is merely stating the obvious.

There is no hope for the Anglican church except for Africa and Asia where its members take their religion seriously. They keep their doctrine and theology intact an Bible based. Poor Williams!
