I agree, perhaps he should set the example and lead the sheep back to the common fold

(And bring that mitre with him, it’s impressive!)

Wow this is remarkable. Since after Henry VIII this has never been known to happen.

When my wife and I converted, our Episcopal priest (and best friend) wasn’t quite so magnanimous.

Wow this is remarkable. Since Henry VIII this has never been known to happen.
Henry continued to consider himself a good Catholic, actually–he just disputed the Bishop of Rome’s writ (he didn’t acknowledge “Pope” as a thing) to run as far as England.

He continued to hear Mass multiple times a day and persecute Protestants . . .

As Ken Kesey would have said, Henry lost control of his own movie. More and more as time went by.

St. Thomas More told him the truth, he didn’t want to hear it.

There’s a theory that basically states that due to Henry’s fall off a horse (during his marriage to Anne Boleyn) he suffered from a head wound which was the cause of his increasingly erratic behavior. Of course all this happened after his divorce from Queen Catherine of Aragon. Now, had one of her sons lived to young adulthood (at least) I seriously doubt he would have split from Rome. I’m sure the protestant revolts would have happened regardless but I don’t think they would have taken hold of the country the way they did following Henry’s death.

I really wouldn’t be surprised if his judgment was increasingly affected by some illness, whether it was a head injury or any one of many other things that could easily have gone ignored or undiagnosed. He started off as a good guy who genuinely loved his wife. He may well have succumbed to some sort of mental imbalance.

If I recall, many Anglicans profess the erroneous “branch theory” whereby they, the Catholic Church, and the Eastern Orthodox Churches are together said to be the one Church of Christ we profess in the Creed. So if one accepts that premise, it obviously makes no difference whether one is Anglican or Catholic. It should not be a shock he believes this.

And that ship is sinking fast. It will completely submerge from sight within 30-40 years, according to projections.

Every time I make a comment like that (“that ship is sinking fast”) some Anglican or other Protestant responds back that the Catholic Church is sinking just as fast and will be gone in a similar amount of time.

However, we know that God will save and protect his church. Even if it got down to 10 good Catholics left on the planet, God would save his church and renew it.

But the Catholic Church is hanging tough in numbers, thanks to Latin America. And there are still orthodox clerics, many now from Africa.

I sometimes worry what will happen when Africa begins to develop and secularize. Perhaps by then the Church will have taken hold in China, which could produce enough priests to keep us going for another 100 years.
I don’t think I will be walking the earth by the time either thing happens though, so I guess it will be future generations’ concern.
