Hey Ya’ll,
I was looking through the Byzantine Daily Worship and Archbishop Raya has some notes about Palamas that downplays his role and suggest his “errors” were refuted by “Russian Theologians” without providing any references. I’d read that after the Palamite Councils in Constantinople it took a period of time, upward of a century or so for the various Orthodox Churches to ratify the anathemas of the council and affirm Palamas’ teaching. I heard the Russian Church initially was skeptical of Palamas’ teachings.
However, in Raya’s work “The Face of God” he discusses at length Palamas’ teaching of the Divine Energies but unlike some Theologians does not suggest is it an ontological reality but an expression of a mystical reality.
Did Archbishop Raya overtime change his views on Gregory Palamas? Are there other Melkite Bishops who have written about Saint Gregory that are not translated into English?
Thanks!
