Archdiocese of St. Paul-Minneapolis to Deny Rainbow Sash Wearers Communion

Brian McNeill, organizer of Rainbow Sash Alliance USA and executive director of Dignity in the Twin Cities has posted a letter dated May 2 in which St. Paul-Minneapolis Archbishop Harry Flynn states that anyone wearing a Rainbow Sash at Pentecost Sunday’s Mass will be denied the Eucharist.

The National Catholic Register has the full details of the story.

“…it has become apparent to me that the wearing of the sash is more and more perceived as a protest against church teaching,” the letter states.

It goes on to say that, “I am asking you to remove your sashes before you receive Holy Communion. I ask you to observe this sign of respect for the Eucharist not only in the Cathedral but in all our parishes. No one wearing the sash will be permitted to receive the Blessed Sacrament.”

For the past four years, Rainbow Sash wearers have been able to receive the Eucharist at the Cathedral of St. Paul and elsewhere. Archbishop Flynn’s actions suggest a change in policy. His letter states that he is acting upon a directive from the Vatican - a directive that he expects all bishops will follow.

In January of this year, Cardinal Francis Arinze issued a clarification, indicating that, “Rainbow Sash wearers…are showing their opposition to Church teaching on a major issue of natural law and so disqualify themselves from being given Holy Communion.”

I spoke with Archdiocesan spokesman Dennis McGrath, and with Brian McNeill the afternoon McNeill received the letter (Tuesday). McNeill told me that despite the letter he will not remove his sash and he still intends to go up for communion.

McGrath told me that it’s not the Archdiocese that has changed, but the Rainbow Sash wearers who have changed. He said that the archbishop’s letter serves as his statement, and did not expect any further statement to be issued.

Also, there was a statement faxed to all the parishes that went into greater detail as to what the policy is. I have yet to actually see a copy, but it was read to me over the phone earlier today (and it will be stuffed into all the bulletins at the Cathedral this weekend). When I get a copy I will post it on my blog (unless someone else gets one online first).

One big thing that I remember was that the policy is not just for Rainbow Sashes but also applies to what other groups might wear to signify denial of Church teaching (which would, I imagine, also cover things like purple sashes for women’s ordination, which the Rainbow Sash Movement recently was promoting).

More info when I have it, if no one else beats me to it 🙂

This, I believe, will do more good than harm. The idea that taking a stand will “offend the faithful” is false. In fact, I think it will inspire the Faithful.

Kudos to Archbishop Flynn.

Oh, I do so agree, kjlw! Thank you Ray M. for the wonderful news. I have just finished emailing a very small note to the new Holy Father, in which I said that after our forty years of preparation in the desert, the time for orthodoxy has now arrived.

And here came your news!

Our “pray(ing) continuously” is bearing fruit!

Praise God! :bowdown2:

🙂 🙂 🙂 And thanks to you too, +veritas+!!! I didn’t even know about the purple sash thing. As a woman, that appalls me.

I’ve always known that if the RS group appeared at my parish, I’d just quietly leave, but now I suppose I must watch for women in purple, too!

Anna 🙂

ALLELUIA !!!
Hope the Bishops in California get this instruction from Rome sweet Home.
What a blessing for a Bishop to take such a public stand for truth, for Catholic integrity and against the ‘fascism of moral perversity’!

WOW!!!

Words cannot adequately describe how elated I am with this news, I am just in awe!

Seems Flynn has experienced a change of heart, or now with Benedict XVI as the Boss, he feels it now to be prudent to step in line knowing the former Cardinal Ratzinger’s reputation.

**With that said, I am absolutely beaming with delight!!!😃 :clapping: :dancing: **

**God Bless Archbishop Harry Flynn!👍 **

Now if we could just get Pilla to drop the “Gay Ministry” on the Cleveland Diocese website!
