Are all animals equal in your eyes?

Well, I hope I never get into that situation because it’s going to be a hard call for me. I admit, my pets are like my children. Since I currently am unmarried and have no human children, I don’t see the harm in that. And I’m tired of people saying animals don’t have feelings or emotions. Look up the grieving rituals of an elephant for starters, and anyone who has dogs or cats can see that they do have feelings. Yes, they lack the intellect we do, but they aren’t void of emotion.

I would probably be more apt to humanely kill my pets to keep them from the pain of starving to death then with the intention of eating them. I would probably eat grass or leaves before I would kill my furry kids. Haven’t been in that situation so I can’t say for certain, but it would cause me great pain and probably permanent psychological damage if I had to eat my pets.

Obviously animals do have value or else St. Francis wouldn’t be St. Francis, considering his great love and compassion for all of God’s creatures. I believe that they deserve humane, compassionate treatment. Dogs and cats do bring alot of joy to human life and I don’t think that should be poo pooed as nothing. That being said, though, there are some animals like cows and pigs that are here for food. So no, I don’t think all animals are equal. Wasn’t there a thread about this not too long ago?

Personally, in a resturant setting, I’ll try anything except dog, cat, horse or inscet at least once.

Im a vegetarian so I cant really say. If it was for survival id drop it with ease.

I could never kill an animal.I think I’d rather die.I eat meat, but I was a vegetarian for years and Ionly eat meat now because the creature is dead and I cant help it and dont want its body to go to waste. And when I eat meat I ask God to take good care of the animal and let it know that its remains are being put to good use.All of Gods creatures are equel, and I love them all.

Not really an arguement, here. Something struck me as being odd in your statement.

By buying meat, you are authorizing the killing of more animals to replace the meat that you just bought from the store. This is how the economic laws of supply and demand are met in life.

It becomes like a “chicken or the egg”, the “which came first” discussion. Did I, authorizing of the killing of more animals come before or after the ideal “well it’s already died, I may as well use it” Does the answer matter? Same outcome, really right?

Yes, I think all animals are equal. If someone is comfortable eating a cow, they should be just as comfortable with the idea of eating cat.

That being said, I’m one of those squeamish people who has never killed her own food. DH and I don’t currently have any pets, so this is theoretical. I grew up having cats and dogs and it would have made me horribly sad to have to kill them, but if it came down to their survival or mine, I’d do it.

If starving, I guess the dogs and cats will have to go. I sure hope that doesn’t happen.

In general, my philosophy is that you can’t eat it if it has a name. So, generally no eating Fluffy because it’s rude. 😛
