So God creates a vast universe of 10\22 stars, with life possibly evolving on many planets around those stars, and then creates “hell” for those rational beings who evolve in this universe but cannot see their way to believing in God?

  1. Hell is created by those who choose to live solely for themselves at the expense of others.
  2. Sincere disbelief is not a reason for being in hell.

What makes a person a human being is both material anatomy and spiritual rational soul.

There are some people, not all people, who talk about “those rational beings who evolve in this universe” (refer to post 82). Depending on readers’ beliefs regarding the sole parents of humanity, there may be some confusion about human nature created by God to temporarily live in this universe.:o

Wait, hell is created by humans, or by God for the use of humans?

That makes more sense, to render hell a psychological state, rather than a physical place. If it were a physical place it would exist alongside “heaven,” which would exist alongside our universe, which will evidently go on expanding for tens of billions of years.

Tony, it’s the process of humans creating hell that baffles me. I presume you don’t picture it people with devils in red jumpsuits prodding naked souls with pitchforks into boiling pools of flame.

I’m glad you approve. Jesuit scholars used to ask my Friend to solve their theological impasses. He was a rather astonishing talent. He had much to say about the topic, as well as others.

That sums it up perfectly on the day we celebrate the day Jesus came to show us how to be one as the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are One - perfectly united by love in stark contrast to the conflicts and suffering on earth … 👍

Ive read that hell is psychological, spiritual, and physical torment.

Jesus used parables and physical images like everlasting fire because spiritual realities need to be explained in simple, concrete terms if they are to be readily understood by everyone. He showed little restraint regarding the horrific nature of evil and its devastating effects on the human race because our entire destiny depends on recognising it for what it is and not making excuses that eventually lead to such atrocities as the massacre of the Innocents, the Holocaust and the millions of abortions in the present generation.

It is said that at the end of the world when Jesus makes his return, he will resurrect the dead (it doesn’t say just the good souls who are going to Heaven). Obviously the ones who are in Heaven receive the good end of the stick in which their flesh returns but there is no sickness, disease, or anything negative. On the other hand, for those in Hell, their flesh would serve only as a means of receiving pain and punishment with no benefit whatsoever.

I suggest you look up and read what was shown at Fatima by the Virgin, a glimpse into hell and the very descriptive sounds and visions that were seen. Physical torment was included in this description.

Some descriptions of hell reveal more about their authors than about hell… Of course their insight into evil may be because they are victims of evil rather than traitors or perpetrators!
