Are all rights given to us by God?

Hey everyone. I have had this thought in my mind for some time concerning various civil rights and debates as to what is a right and what is not.

Basically my idea says that all rights are given to us by God and therefore all rights that are given to us by the state cannot be in contradiction to the rights given to us by God. So, if the state declares that we have a right to something that God says we don’t have a right to then in reality, there is no right to that thing the state said we had a right to because God didn’t give us that right.

So, when it comes to marriage, God gave one man the right to marry one woman but He did not give two men the right to marry each other. The state might try to give two men the right to marry each other but even if they do so, its still not a true right because God never gave people that right to begin with.

What do you all think about this?

👍

I think that was well put.

Man is the Created, not the Creator. When Man usurps God, that is the pathway to destruction.

That’s the orthodox Catholic concept of the State. When certain evils must be immune from coercion, they should be merely tolerated, never endorsed.

Are rights God given or are we given responsibilities, with rights an outgrowth of governments that might otherwise be overzealous in seeking to temporally enforce those responsibilities?

Yes, definitely, you’re right. All rights are given to us by God, not given to us by the state. Sometimes people erroneously speak of government granting us rights, but to speak that way muddies the water. Government can grant privileges, but only God can grant rights. That is why the U.S. Bill of Rights was established, to keep government from taking away rights that our Creator had given us.

Which suggests that the purpose of government is to take away rights, not give them. To repeat, government can only take away rights, not give them. Because of course, there are some rights people should not have, such as murdering each other, stealing, fraud, that sort of thing. Should they have the right to discriminate? Maybe, maybe not.

Of course, government can recognize rights, and defer from taking them away. That is why it is said the people have certain unalienable rights.

Yes, I agree. The government cannot give us any rights because all of the rights that we have are from God. Therefore, the government has no right to create new rights such as the so-called “right” to “gay marriage”.
