Are all sins that involve the occult really against the first commandment?

Ahhhhhhhhh there is the crux of the matter.

Dabbling in the occult for entertainment purposes alone…oh boy, what a loaded situation you create for yourself.

Nolo tangere!! Don’t touch; don’t experiment; don’t go near it. It is evil and it is a portal to evil influence.

Testing the ouija board is not like testing a tool sent by American Woodworkers for your critique.

Toying with the occult is dangerous to you. It opens you and your home up to demonic infestation and molestation.

Wake up, smell the annointing oil.
 
Yes. The Church prohibits it. By doing so you are communicating with evil and you should only communicate with God. Praying is communicating so, if you take it this way you would be praying to the evil one.
 
I know it’s wrong to mess with the occult. That isn’t what I asked.

I know Catholics who are totally into the New Age movement of eastern meditations/homeopathy etc.
