Are ALL tattoos forbidden?

I was talking with another mom recently. We were wondering, since they are so common nowadays, whether ALL tattoos are forbidden or if some are allowed, such as the religious ones?

What about body piercings?

I do remember reading prohibitions in Leviticus, I think, where these are called body mutilations…presumably, because our bodies belong to God, not to us.

I’m not even going to mention unnecessary cosmetic surgery!😃
 
As Christians, we are not bound by the ceremonial laws of the Old Testament. We can eat shrimp, go out in public during our menstrual cycle and get tattoos or piercings.

Tattoos are morally neutral.

I see, but even if there isn’t an OT law binding us, are our bodies not the Temple of the Holy Spirit and aren’t we supposed to not mutilate them?

Morally neutral…neither good nor bad.

Some may see “mutilation”; others may see “ornamentation”.
 
Morally neutral, its the circumstances that surround them that can make them go either way, but not because of the Old Testament.

Another thing, I like to read anthropological/cultural type books, and have noticed that the more pagan, the more tattoos and body piercings…

Since these are so common among mono-theistic believers now, I wonder…
 
I don’t see anything wrong with them as long as they aren’t occultish. I’ve thought about getting a celtic cross on my back for years but the pain factor is what turns me off. I would like a permanent symbol of my faith. Also the location is a another factor but I’m sure I don’t need to elaborate on that. :eek::D:shrug:

I do not have any tattoos but I have heard that the pain is not quite as bad as people think it will be.

I have two tattoos: a cross on the back of my neck and a trinity knot on my wrist… The pain is nothing, and I’m a wimp. 😛

I don’t see anything wrong with them. For me, the first was more of a “proclamation” of my faith shortly after I became a Christian, and it was one way I could declare my beliefs silently (I wear my hair up A LOT). And the second was to serve as a reminder to myself of my faith, for every time I work with my hands I see it.

I’m open to more, but I have to be really set about what I wanted.

I don’t have any, but I can see the point about the religious ones…that’s why I specifically ask about them…

I guess it depends on your perception … tattoo on my lower back = me almost passing out. Giving birth to 3 children naturally, no meds = no problem for me. 🤷
 
As someone who is well marked (both forearms, both bicepts & the upper 3rd of my back) I have NO RIGHT to tell you not to get marked. ***BUT *** I will offer this advice. Do not do it without a lot of thought. I got my 1st tattoo at 42. Here is what i did: I imagined what I wanted & where I wanted it. Then 6 months later I looked at the same spot again & thought if I still wanted it to be there. I did this from the time I was 14!!! Just make sure you want it & think of a theam. Irregular non related tattoos look stupid. ALSO Pick a good, liscened artist. Do not just say “today I’ll get marked” Make it a deliberate, informed decision. I did & I regret nothing.
 
O’ AND CUSTOM. always get custom NEVER get “flash” EVERYBODY has flash. Only have 1 of a kind. All of mine are.
 
Isn’t it strange that both Judaism and Islam have prohibitions against any type of self-mutilation to the body because it is seen as belonging to God, not ourselves, and as the “temple of the spirit” [small cap s]…we who see it as the “temple of the Spirit” [cap S], don’t have a prohibition against body piercing or tattooing or what we eat or anything, really…

Is that odd or what?
 
Some people have gorgeous tatts of the Virgin Mary and other Icons. How can those be sinful?

I’m not saying that I find them sinful. I’m just stating that other religions, the other two that are monotheistic, have religious prohibitions against body mutilations. I may like or dislike certain tattoos, but don’t think it’s a SIN per se.

I have seen some really neat icons and faces of Jesus, for example. I am not sure why one should feel the need to have anything tattooed into one’s body personally, but would never say those are sinful.

Apparently, we did away with the OT prohibitions along with the food prohibitions. I guess we only kept the ones on animal blood, drowned/asphyxiated animals, and animals offered to pagan idols.

We also are the only ones of the 3 monotheistic religions that don’t have male circumcision. I guess we could say that’s body mutilation as well, no?

Now, I will say I have seen some people who seem like walking billboards…some of the images quite disturbing as well…

What do you think of those? And of body piercings?

I hope I didn’t offend you! That wasn’t my intention! To the best of my knowledge, your right about all the things you say in your post! I was just throwing my two cents in to the general discussion.

I actually think that most “body art” is kind of gross. I think some people go overboard with tattoos, like people can with anything, really.

Having said that, to each their own. I personally would never get one, but many people who I love and respect have several.

Body piercings? I have an earring, and I’m a guy. I always wear a hoop through it. I thought about a nose ring and other earrings, but now I’m a bit too old for it.

I think they’re fine…kind of cute, actually.
 
I have been in staffing and recruiting for a couple of years…

Don’t get a tat where you can’t easily cover it.
