Are all things lawful?

Hi, I am new and joined this forum because I have a question regarding the scripture in 1Cor.6[12] “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be enslaved by anything…

I am debating with my friend, who was taught years ago that this ment a christian is not bound by the law anymore nor are we bound to keep the law. My argument is that Christ did not obolish the requirement to keep the law but that we are saved through Christ who kept the law perfectly. She said we are permitted to break the law but that it is not profitable. I said we are called to be holy and sin no more, thus keeping the law (although it is not the law thatt saves us) so we go round and round…Can anybody clear this up for us?

The external law of the Old Testament was brought to perfect fulfillment (not eliminated) by the new interior Law of grace brought about by the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The Corinthians strayed from the Church and adopted the slogan “Everything is lawful for me.” This, as I understand it came about when certain food items (cloven hoofed animals, shell fish, food offered in temple, etc.) were deemed to no longer be a requirement. Remember when the gentiles were accused of eating unclean things? Well, the Corinthians took that and ran with it. In the verse you are citing, the topic being discussed is sexuality. The Corinthians, seeing that food which used to be considered “unclean” and was therefore a sin to consume, was now not sinful; attempted to expand this into the area of sexuality and the eating of food meant as sacrifice to other gods. This is seen again in I Cor 10:23. What Paul is actually saying to the Corinthians is that though you may be allowed to do something (IE - Eat all foods), if that something causes another to sin (IE - Someone witnesses you eating what would be a perfectly acceptable food except that it was meant as a sacrifice to a false god) you should infact not do it. The best way to grasp this whole subject and in fact refute your friend’s claim can be found in I Cor chapter 8 through chapter 10. This should quill any further misunderstandings on the subject. This is a perfect example of why it is so important to read verses in context and compare them to the whole of the message. God bless.

Thank you so much for your reponse. My friend learned this teaching in a Christian comune many years ago and holds to it. She is not a Catholic and up until she and I became freinds she thought we were a cult of sorts. Happily I have been able to share what I am learning with her and slowly she is warming to the Catholic perspective.
