Are American values at their root against Catholicism?

And Catholicism would be a thing of the past if Germany won WWII or the Soviet Union won the cold war.

Is it that hard to follow? No America. No Catholicism.

Now that’s interesting. You believe the fate of the Catholic Church depended upon US military actions? Do you believe the CC still depends on the US for its survival?

This is not me agreeing or disagreeing, by the way. I’m frankly stunned and amazed by your statement.

I don’t think Classical Liberal values are against ,or incompatible with, Catholicism per se, only when they decide to remove God and/or the natural law from any kind of importance or recognition.

We’re now in a new kind of era where increasingly liberalism’s focus on personal freedom has been developed to frame personal freedom and choice as the highest moral good, this is beyond ordinary liberalism, it is a kind of selfism, Now that I would say is incompatible with, and ultimately must be against, Catholicism.

This is the system which cannot admit any reasons not to allow virtually unrestricted abortion or euthanasia, and so on. It’s not an ‘American’ value uniquely, but is ascendent and increasingly ubiquitous in all the west.

Now, I’m curious. Do other Catholics hold to the same view as HS?

Yes. Without a check, China would eliminate Christianity. As would Russia. And proponents of radical Islam would destroy it with glee.

Let me guess. You are under 30, and have no idea what life during the Cold War was like.

Above are the 3 largest threats to freedom in the world. All would gladly end Christianity if given the opportunity. America is the last line of defense for the free exercise of Religion.

I think the rest of your assertions are a curiosity, but I doubt they square with what I’m told by most Catholics, is an assurance that the Church will always preservere, no matter what.

Thanks for sharing your viewpoint though, it’s truly very enlightening for me to understand your perspective.

Why do you think the Germans and the USSR failed? It’s not rocket surgery.

I would say that SOME of the American values CONFLICT with Catholicism. I wouldn’t say it directly goes against the Church, but conflicts.

The values that I would say conflict are: “the pursue of happiness,” our sense of classical liberalism, and individualism. We also, traditionally, have a black and white understanding of the law, while other nations have the notion of the “spirit of the law.”

All of these CAN be taken to extremes, can lead to secularism, and are part of why Catholic Cardinals around the world have been weary of an American Pope.

So while I would not say that American values are directly opposed to the Catholic Church, there is something about American values that lend themselves better to evangelical Protestants and secularist.

God Bless.

I’ve been there saying that because well I don’t always think it’s worthy of His intercession.

I’ve heard people say things along the lines of: “if God will just grant me X, I’ll be able to take it from there.”

What are your thoughts?
Not being American , and not knowing what American values are ( I am British , but I don’t think there are such things as “British values” ) , I can’t answer your question .

I have a question though .

Does not the American Constitution say what American values are ? ( In Britain we don’t have a codified , written constitution ) .

The Declaration of Independence states what American values are. Fun fact-the Declaration of Independence was based on Natural Law!
