Since there are several Baptists message boards that are asking if Catholics are Christians and they are responding that Catholics or the Catholic church is not a Christian church, how do you feel about the Baptist church and faith? Are they Christians?
I just figure, if they can ask it about us why can’t we ask it about them?:hmmm:

Hi Sunnyday,
Obviously you checked out the boards I told everyone about :crying: those message boards have left me feeling that some Baptists are most certainly Christians and have shown christian brotherly love but I have also seen some very un christian behavior and if that is what being a Baptist is about, then I would have to question their Christianity, I don’t know if its Baptists as a whole or just some bad apples 😉 I have known some very nice people who were Baptists and had no doubt they were christians and they had no doubt I was also a christian but I’m really left utterly confused right now, so I’m very torn in two directions right now and need to pray and think about all this
Peace 👍

Baptism makes a person a Christian. If a Baptist is baptised, then he is a Christian.

try explaining that to the Baptists, If I tell them that as a Catholic I’m Baptized and I’m a christian they will say too bad we still say your not christian or if you are the Catholic church is not, that is what I was having a difficult time with on this baptist message board I stumbled upon, someone started a poll asking if catholics were really christian or not and many said nope Catholics are not or the Catholic church is not and weather we are baptized or not made no difference whatsoever to them.
Just what I was reading

If you are on a Forum and some ignorant people said that Catholics were not Christian, I would say, “Goodbye”. You will not be able to reason with the unreasonable.

Well… after you manage to define the 47 Heinz varieties of Baptists… you will find that there are some that one finds it difficult to accept as being Christian.

Even with a Baptism that we accept, it is not the form that matters but what is in the heart. If these people do not consider us as their Christian brothers and sisters then perhaps the problem is internal.

What I mean is that Jesus said that there are two commandments: (1) Love God and (2) Love thy neighbour. That means if a person does not show love towards a neighbour through acceptance that person’s faith, and by constant ridicule and other demeaning actions, then one has to ask… is he/she really a follower of Christ?

To be Christian means to do as Jesus said: “pick up your Cross and follow me”.

I can point to one very Christian gentleman on this board. His name is EdwinG. He does not understand the Catholic faith, and I hope that in time we can continue to enlighten him. He is my Christian brother.

At the same time I can point to an extraordinary experience on another list where the adversary was preaching something that goes against the Scripture. He was a Puritan. It ended up 4 Catholics plus 4 Protestant Christians against this one man. We tried to enlighten him but he would not listen to any other voice than his own. He slandered the Catholic Church. He finally made the decision to leave the list, and perhaps we felt that we had failed to get our message through. However, I am not sure if that is the case. What is so extraordinary is that we have all been drawn together, united in Christ as we worked to try and point out the error that this man was making.

In other words if you show love to others, then that love will be returned. You cannot imagine how much I appreciated the support of those Protestants whilst trying to set this person straight about God’s real message of salvation.

because we are to take the high road. we know that catholics can be Christians (just as some “catholics” aren’t really Christian and therefore aren’t true catholics) just as baptists can be Christian (and there are some who are baptist but not Christian). why stoop to their level of name-calling (i.e. not-Christian)? let’s be better than this thread.

Before one says that another is not Christian, one should ask himself how Christian he really is. This about sums it up.

If they say you aren’t Christian because you are Catholic, something is wrong with them, not with you, so why do you care? Except maybe for their salvation, should invincible ignorance actually not apply. But kindly please get off Baptists as a whole.

Yes, I believe Baptists are Christians.

I also believe (through evidenced reading online) that there are some who do not practice Christian Values. Some seemed to rejoice in their anti-Catholic rhetoric. And at first it made me very angry. Then I calmed down, and it just made me sad for them. I’m sad that they can’t see how destructive their words were. I was sad because they couldn’t see through their hate to God’s love.
So now I just steer clear of those boards, and include them in my prayers. Even if they can’t find their way to the one true Church, perhaps they can at least find their way out of their hate for those who are here.

But I don’t believe the vast majority of Baptists are like that, I really don’t.

I still hold that if the majority of Protestants knew the real facts of the Catholic Church, they would come home. That’s what I pray for.

And here comes useful the Cardinal Newman quote someone has in his signature around here. “To know history is to cease to be a Protestant”…

The term christian mean “christ like”. I believe that you can call yourself a member of any church and not be “christian”.

“Going to church makes you a christian about as much as going to McDonalds makes you a hamburger.”

People who are ignorant often make stupid coments. Try not to group all Baptists as non christain, because as I said before there are many people who are not “christ like” who claim an afiliation with Him.

Just for your info I am ABA Missionary Baptist.

Actually, Christian means “follower of Christ”. We would all I think want to be “Christ-like”, but if we don’t act in a Christ-like manner that doesn’t mean that we stop being Christian, it means that we stop (for that instance) acting Christian.

There is a big difference.

If someone claims to be Christian, it would be dangerous to call them otherwise. Let God read their heart. We sinful humans have that large beam wedged in our eyes!

The Catechism of the Catholic Church makes it clear that we are to consider them our brothers and sisters in Christ and so, of course, they are christians in a real sense of the word. We should not let the actions of an ignorant few define our feelings about the group as a whole.

Yes, I’ve spent time debating issues with them and some are hopelessly caught up in the Jack Chick version of christianity that paints our Church as the Whore of Babylon. But although I disagree with them on matters of doctrine, I certainly must applaud their zeal for the faith - as misguided as I believe it is.

Peace of Christ.

Invincible Ignorance relates to those who have never had the opportunity to hear the Gospel message. That doctrine does not apply to Baptists.

Hilary,

having come across Missionary Baptists in the past I do know the worst of that variety and am not impressed.

However, I agree with your remark about being Christ like. That is the point that I am making. There are many who get on those boards, who are not in the slightest bit Christ like in the way that they spew hatred towards the Catholic Church. That is why it is difficult to call them Christians. Since they are baptized then of course they are members of the Church universal.

To this I will add that my comment goes well beyond those who are Baptist and behave in a certain manner because it is extended to all who get on message boards and spew hatred towards others, and that includes those who call themselves Catholic but act nothing like a Catholic.

Why is the group Baptists being singled out in this post?

Like ANY Christian denomination there are good and bad seeds.

I know some very angry Baptist’s whose intentions I question…

And I know some very wonderful Baptist’s who truly love Jesus and are great Christians.

Does this mean I agree with their teachings?? No, not really, but that doesn’t mean I think they’re all doomed. I’m sure those of many denominations will be in Heaven with Jesus.

Elizabeth,

the one who started the thread is well intentioned. The question stems from the fact that many Baptists do not consider Catholics to be Christian. I have seen the posts on the various Baptist boards as well as what is placed on a variety of Baptist web sites. The worst of the offenders are the Landmark and Primitive Baptists but any Independent Fundamentalist Baptist Church can be equally as bad. That is why the question is being asked.

So far Hilary has been gracious enough to give some kind of response, and I personally agree with the major point that she made about Christ like behaviour.

In my posts on this thread I have pointed out at least two other groups that I consider need attention because of their attitude to Catholics. These groups are Puritan and One True Church activists.

If you have been condemned to hell for disagreeing with these people then you would see where I am coming from 🙂 .

Also, I have had personal family experience with Baptists and I am left extremely unimpressed by the antics that occurred. No need to detail everything that happened. Needless to say there is a certain lack of distrust of Baptists where I am personally concerned. However, if a person who is a Baptist treats me as another Christian, and not someone to villify then I will be happy to converse with that person on the ordinary level.

You are right, some Baptists do not consider Catholics Christians…actually it’s not only Baptists. I was speaking with my sister, who was telling me how before she got together with her boyfriend, he truly thought that Catholics were not Christians. Not because he disagreed with their teachings, but because that is what he was taught! He just didn’t know any better. How sad is that.

Trust me when I say, I know exactly where you come from. I have spoken with many Baptists, and was very shocked at what they said about the Catholic Church. I do not agree with the Catholic Church on every matter, and do think it has its faults here and there, BUT I would never say the things that some of the Baptists I’ve spoken with said about your Church. And even though I am not Catholic I felt obligated to defend your church.

God Bless,
Elizabeth
