Are blessings appropriate?

Quick question:

Is it appropriate to ask a priest to bless a site where someone died? Someone committed suicide at a school location last night, and I’m creeped out at the thought of returning to that area for work.

Can I ask my pastor to bless the area? Should I ask my friend (who’s also a priest) to bless the place? Is it appropriate?

Just wondering.

There is a book called “The Book of Blessings” that outlines who, what and how things and persons may be blessed. Some blessings may be done by a layman, others a deacon, others a priest and even some reserved to a bishop.

It should be blessed. And you should protect yourself with rosary beads, a cross and anoint yourself with holy water if possible. It is likely that the person’s spirit remains there, especially if they committed suicide. If you get a funny feeling of a presence, then I would have it blessed post haste.

I’m non-Catholic, so what I’m giving you is not Church teaching.

But, I’ve seen this many times that a person who has committed suicide remains on the earth and close to where they died. You could personally say a prayer out loud that if there is a spirit there, that it go into the light and not fear retribution. Ask St. Michael to escort them home.

It seems quite appropriate. It’s definitely worth asking your pastor and/or priest friend about it. Not knowing the details of the situation, I can’t really comment on whether or not it would be pastorally prudent to do so at this time, but I don’t think there’s anything in Church teaching that would prevent a priest from blessing the area if they felt it was good to do.

I would also offer a Mass for the person who died. They are probably in much need of prayer.
