Your not lying to them by showing compassion. When someone has depression, you do not tell them its all in their head and to man up.🤷
Who says not showing compassion?
Just talk with them lovingly.
.
No lies. No supporting of wrong choices.

But loving the person with compassion.

True compassion.
A splendid quote:

"Only in truth does charity shine forth, only in truth can charity be authentically lived.

Without truth, charity degenerates into sentimentality. Love becomes an empty shell, to be filled in an arbitrary way. In a culture without truth, this is the fatal risk facing love. It falls prey to contingent subjective emotions and opinions…"

CARITAS IN VERITATE

I think for most of us, if we’re honest, it depends whether the transgender person in question is in earshot or not. Just like in most other social situations, especially the awkward ones, we want to avoid conflict first and foremost.

We are “Pittsburgh friendly”, we don’t want YOU to think we are unfriendly, so we wait til you walk off to say what we really think.

I just don’t think there is a way to insist on addressing someone with the correct pronoun for their sex without causing conflict, even if it’s an accidental slip up.

I want to add my experience. My “solution” to the Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner thing was to refer to him as “Jenner.” This sufficed for a few weeks until I lived in a community house that was supposed to be all-female, but then a transgendered MTF was transferred to our house. I could not refer to this person by his last name!! So we ended up calling him by his preferred (female) first name, and I tried at all costs to never have to use a pronoun but to call him by name instead. We ended up giving in and calling him a she.

I have strong feelings against this. Feminists and liberals like to talk about cultural appropriation, and transgenderism seems to me a perfect example of cultural appropriation. You want to come in and change God’s laws about what makes a woman a woman? You want to say you are one and then come and tell us how it’s done? … these kinds of thoughts do not seem charitable to me though so I keep them mostly to myself.

I really dislike the way women are being bullied into putting their feelings aside to accommodate mtf individuals. If people want to live that way that’s up to them but I would not be comfortable sharing a changing room, public toilets or a hospital ward with someone with an adult male body.

I don’t have a problem calling a transgender by whatever name they’ve chosen. Folks can legally change their name. So, Caitlyn Jenner it is. If I knew the man personally and he wanted to go by Kate- Kate it is. But he, him, his… although I would strive to use Caitlyn, Caitlyn’s or Kate, Kate’s…

It depends on whether you want to be on speaking terms with them in the future.
This is the only correct answer I think.

On the one hand, the whole transgender thing goes against nature and God’s creation, and sometimes the truth is more important than being nice to somebody, you have to be cruel to be kind so I don’t thin I would address them the way they’d like to.

However, if you need to be on good terms with them, some diplomacy is required.
