Can Catholics donate blood at an American Red Cross blood drive? Or is this against our beliefs?

Thank you to all the Catholics that have donated and continue to donate!

I’m a retired Medical Technologist and we love all our donors! ❤️❤️❤️

Just out of curiosity, what would have made you think we could not?

Doesn’t donating blood actually count as a corporal work of mercy and is therefore encouraged?

Why would the American Red Cross have anything to do with the morality of blood donation?

Donating blood is a corporal work of mercy.

I’m not sure, aren’t some groups against it? I was thinking about doing it this week in town where they are having one. I don’t mind needles I just never have donated blood before. I just didn’t know what the Church taught on it. I mean it may sound ridiculous but I just didn’t know for sure if it may be considered harming yourself or the body God gave you or something, like the your body is the temple. Hard to explain. I just wanted to make sure is all.

Yes there are some religions that are opposed to giving or receiving blood. But it’s fine for a Catholic to do so. I would encourage you to give it a try!

It had nothing to do with the American Red Cross. I was just being specific as to who is having it.
I was just wondering about blood donations in general.

thank you for your impending blood donation, and thank you to all who donate.

Praise God.

As noted above, Jehovah’s Witnesses are opposed, but their beliefs are so far afield from ours that they aren’t even close to comparable.

You bet we can. Down here you can get a free movie ticket for donating blood.

It’s a great act of charity to donate blood, bless all those who do!
