Are Catholics allowed to donate blood?

Tea/coffee and a cookie/biscuit here. Wouldn’t want to faint after donating!

If Catholics can’t donate blood, I’m going to have to stop working on my own cars . . .

😜😱

Yah I did it today.

Some of the questions made me uncomfortable when asked honestly. Like homosexual behavior questions and stuff.

Better to be uncomfortable and answer honestly than lie. Those questions are very important.

Why do they ask about if I have been around someone who has been vaccinated for Smallpox in the past year?
Do people even get vaccinated for Smallpox anymore? I thought it was eradicated in the 70s.

Congratulations on your first donation. Keep it up. It really is the gift of life.

As far as the questions… I have suggested to my blood bank that instead of just Yes and No options they should add “The answer is still YES” (or NO) just to give us a little variety.

Their answer was NO.

Yah I did that pre registration or fast pass I think it is called.
But the girl interviewing me said " Since doing the questions have you stuck any needles in you, had sex with a prostitute, or with a male?"

I was like… No. Here I am wearing a miraculous medal and I’m asked that.

I don’t see the immorality with donating blood that will go to help save a life or contribute to Red Cross in someway. I honestly would love to get back into donating again now I can drive myself around. I’ve been holding back because the first time I gave blood was in high school, and I didn’t give enough because it wasn’t “thin enough”, and only gave so much to help in research. I felt really awful seeing people wear “I saved a life” stickers that day, knowing my body couldn’t give enough to save someone. 😅

But I learned to get over that and i’m ready to try again!

Good questions! People traveling to certain areas where smallpox is not 100% eradicated will often voluntarily get the vaccination. If they do, they shed small amounts of the modified virus which others can carry for a period of time. If immunocompromised patients receive blood from someone that has these small amounts of virus, it can cause problems. You and I are fine, these patients can be so sensitive as to cause reactions or other problems.

Please, don’t be mad! They HAVE to ask. And if you think the miraculous medal assures they haven’t sinned…well, they HAVE to ask.

And I’m not pregnant, either . . .

🤯😱🤔

The biggest problem for me with the litany of questions is that I really need to get in and going quickly.

I can only donate when I stumble across a truck somewhere, or unexpectedly come across a building for it when I have unexpected time . . .

If I sit there realizing what I’m about to do, or if I see the blood (or even someone else’s!), uhm, errr . . . and then they have to take care of me until they’re sure that my blood pressure is high enough to be let on my way . . .

One time, when I thought I’d done well, I realized that three of them had walked me halfway across the building before I noticed . . . they said I should stay quite a while that day . . .

I told my students that when they had a blood drive, to just come and get me from my office when there was an opening. One time, one thoughtfully told me that they’d be coming tomorrow at 11 . . . that didn’t work . . .

Oh I get that.
They said I have nice vein or whatever they put the needle in. Probably not an artery.
4 minutes and 50 seconds for a pint. I guess thats faster than most but theres factors why some people are faster than others.
Though I asked what the record was and the girl said you don’t want the record because if it is to fast it can mean you have some issues.
But yah besides the questions it was fine. The questions I get it , it was more I just wasn’t expected to be asked that so bluntly is all. I just read during the procedure it was easy.

That would take rather . . . significant . . . blood pressure . . .

My blood pressure was great. 114/80. I’m only 35.
