Are Catholics allowed to say bad words?

I mostly use the Word " sh^t" and the F word, but I never say them to insult anyone like for example, " F you!". I use curse words when I say stuff like " F that Sh^t", “Sh^t happens”, " F no", " this is bullzhiit", " F yeah!" etc. so is this in anyway a sin? Some of my Protestant family members say its a sin.
 
I dont know the verse but the Bible does say not to use filthy language. And why say such words? It makes you look like you vocabulary is well…limited. Would you say that in front of Jesu? God Bless you!! 🙂

Thats what I always say, except I use Mother Mary. 🙂

I curse, though I have drastically cut down. I think it sounds disgusting.:o

Her too!!! I can’t imagine cussing in front of Jesus or Mary!! But it can be hard sometimes!
 
Think about the literal meaning of the words. You’re basically talking about fornicating with bowel movement. Do you think speaking like this is pleasing to God?
I’m not actually sure if those words are sins or not, but I don’t use them myself.

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
Or:
Romans 12:2*- And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what [is] that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
 
Words without meaning are just empty words. Empty words are just wasted breath. I swear from time to time, but there are certain words I try not to use. I never ever ever ever ever ever say God**** because while I may not be damning anyone or anything, the word itself is obviously using God’s name in vain in a very disrespectful way.
 
This is my personal opinion. I am not infallible and therefore completely capable of being wrong. That disclaimer given:
I’m under the impression that bad words are bad because they are untruth or a misuse of a proper word. The word “***” in relation to a donkey is acceptable because that is the proper place for that word (or else the word would not be used in the liturgy during the Palm Sunday mass), just as “Hell” in reference to a place of torment is acceptable (when not directed at a person). The others strike me as very easily misplaced and misused. G-D and J-C are obvious swear words and in violation of the commandments because God’s name is used irreverently.

My husband, on the other hand, believes that a swear word is anything from “Ah, Flapjack!” to “Fiddlesticks”, if the society believes the word to be a “swear word”. He views swear words as relative. So he has no problem saying F-bombs all the time- to my dismay.

I’d like to hear what others have to say about the matter as well. My domestic church could use a little more knowledge on the matter. :confused:
 
Here you call them ‘bad words’. I call it ‘vulgar language’ not suited to any Catholic. Try incorporating those words into your prayers.

You can always turn to the bible for guidance. After all, it is a Catholic book!!!

The words you allude to are definitely not in the same class as abusing the name of God or of holy persons or things, which is very serious. But they are still vulgar and impolite. I grant that the “impolite” factor is largely relative to culture. Some people use as terms of endearment what others would consider fightin’ words. Nevertheless, these words are still associated with evil attitudes and lifestyles (if I say “prison language” you know what I mean by it), although they have become more mainstream in recent decades, unfortunately.

Same here dude. I never use Gods name in vain.
 
Okay i get it, its vulgar and impolite. But my question is if it’s a sin or not. If not I will continue using these words regardless of what other people in society think.

I say yes (although i could be wrong)!!
 
My view: any of them are just words - you could say mouse or too you. They are just words, what counts is the emotion or feeling behind them. Using any word with the emotion of anger or hatred is just as bad as using any other word. For it goes against the second commandment of “love thy neighbor as thyself”

I also fall into that category of using words like that - even though I try not to. The only thing we can do is try harder 🙂

I find that using vulgar language indicates a limited vocabulary. And to continue using such language in the face of objections from others becomes a sin. So you will continue to use such language even though you know it is unacceptable in polite company, or in your words “regardless of what other people in society think”? My definition of polite company is everyone other than me. Yeah, I like to give them the benefit of the doubt.
 
I would like to include some more examples of how I use these words in my everyday life.

When my mom tells me that we’re going on a family vacation to another country, I would reply with " F yeah!"

When I get back home from the store and realize I forgot something that needed to buy, I would say to myself " Aw F It, I’ll go back tomorrow."

When I realize that my unfinished homework was going to be due today, I would say something like " S^it, I totally forgot about it".

When I see an advertisement on tv of people claiming they got ripped muscles by using the shake weight, I would laugh and say " bulls^it".
 
Is swearing a sin? I think so. I find, anyway, it damages my relationship with God. Therefore, while it may not be a mortal sin to swear, I would argue that it most definitely IS a venial sin. Also, it does go against, I would think, the Ephesians reference given a couple times above.

If I point one finger at others, I’m pointing 4 fingers at myself. I unfortunately find it difficult to control my emotions at times and I use those words but then I feel like a jerk afterwords.
