Are Catholics Christian?

Hello,

Before a bunch of Catholics reply to this question, I am a Catholic and so obviously I believe we are Christian. My question is for non-Catholic Christians, especially the anti-Catholic ones out there. I’ve run into some severe anti-Catholicism and am wondering whether or not you believe that Catholics are Christians.

This was the topic in recent thread/poll. The vast majority said, yes they are. Of course they are.

The term “Christian” was already in circulation when it was coined in “Antioch” where Gentile Christianity had developed in the first century. The point I wish to make here is that only the Catholic church was in existance when the term “Christian” was recorded and documented. I believe it was “Tertullian” who said “my first name is Catholic, my second name is Christian”, or St. Augustine? sorry my memory has left me here?

I believe the anti catholic rhetoric who accuse Catholics of not being Christians, are really stating Catholics dont believe as they do, and have a pagan understanding of the Catholic church that needs to be corrected.

I agree with you, but I’ve also had sustained conversations with anti-Catholics who never budged in their belief that I was not a Christian, but was rather being deceived by Satan.
 
In my prior faiths, Catholics were the whore of Babylon or worse. Granted the LDS won’t actively state that anymore, but any cursory read of the Book of Mormon will reveal the bias. Jehovah’s Witness don’t bother to resort to such sublty. That’s one of the main reasons for my delayed crossing of the Tiber - having to rid myself of thinking of the Catholic Church as the enemy.

You cant get any more Christian when you are baptised, and recieve the body, blood soul and divinity of Jesus Christ in his blessed (Eucharist) Sacrament. Maybe asking the anit catholic what does it mean to be Christian? and then give your answer what makes you christian in the body of Jesus Christ. Then at this time would be helpful in clarifying the anti catholic’s misconceptions of the Catholic church and give witness to the truth. I know this can be easier said than done at times. That is why prayer, fasting along with biblical catechesis helps me in my sacrament of Confirmation to proclaim Christ crucified.

There is only one response to that: No, dear friend, YOU are the one who is deceived by Satan. But since I am a Christian, I will pray for your conversion.😛

Now, I have been told that by Catholics here, too - that I am being decieved by Satan. There’s an extreme fringe on both sides that needs to be convinced they are wrong, or ignored.

That is a good point, but I think the two camps are a bit different. I have never seen a Catholic try to convince a non-C Christian that they are following the antichrist or whore of babylon or any other such nonsense. Maybe some do and I’ve just never seen it. I have, though, been looked at like a leper when I’ve told a non-C that I was Catholic. Being from a mainstream denomination (Lutheran), it is probably not as common since these same people who are critical of Catholicism might also be critical of your faith.

I don’t mind the Catholic response. I just didn’t want people to start arguing with me as if I was questioning the fact that Catholics were Christians.

I think a lot of the people who believe Catholics are not Christian simply adhere to many misconceptions about the faith. My parents have never been anti-Catholic, but my mom did believe that Catholics pray TO Mary and the saints, rather than THROUGH them, thereby putting them on the same level as God. She did some more research and admits she was wrong about that, though. I used to think a lot of things Catholics did were kind of weird as well, but once I started researching and learned the real beliefs and how they came about…well, let’s just say that I was confirmed last night as a Catholic 😃

Also, I think it’s possible that some people just enjoy being exclusive, because it makes them feel better. “No, we’re the right church, and everyone else is wrong and going to Hell!” That used to be my grandma’s thinking (she’s SDA), but she got over that. Probably because my mom is a better Christian in many ways than some people at my grandma’s church.

Well Cathloics are the very first Christians and there was not a protestant on earth until about 1500.SO YES CATHLOIC ARE CHRISTIANS

Now that is true!
You are right that anti-christ and especially whore of babylon seems to be reserved for the CC. Heretic is the term I often see. It is sad indeed that Christians refer to each other this way. No wonder some non-Christians look on us with skepticism. 🤷

Of course RCs are Christians! I haven’t encountered anyone who doesn’t think so, apart from Jack Chick and the Jack Chick-wannabes outthere, and they’re beyond reach anyway.
Most people, I think, who think RCs aren’t Christians are members of some obscure sect that has little to do with Christianity apart from using its name.

Catholics travel in bunches. Protestants in groups. Perhaps someday we can reconcile this division.
