What I’ve found to be the case is that there is a substantial protestant view Christianity is one of completion through faith. God does the work and we’re saved by faith. Nothing more required. However, Catholicism is viewed as faith plus something else or commonly called a works based faith. Since it doesn’t meet the definition defined by protestants as a free gift then its not. There is a common saying among these same protestants: " You know true christian faith by the term done not do." They claim that to be catholic you must “do” and therefore are in an attempt to earn grace and thus not christian.
