I have been told by several people that once a Catholic is over 65 yrs of age, they are no longer obliged to attend Sunday Mass under pain of Mortal sin. Is this true, please?

I know it applies to Lenten fasting, etc., but am uncertain about Sunday Mass obligation. Thanks very much! Kathleen

Hi,

No–it is NOT true. Keeping holy the Lord’s Day is one of the Ten Commanmdments. The Mass is the celebration of what the Lord endured for us on Calvary. Why would anyone who believes this want to not be there to receive Him in Holy Communion?

Incidentally, people over sixty five are expected to still honor their mother and father and to observe all the other Commandmentsas well!
