Are Catholics forbidden to read the Bible?

Last Thursday my son’s 10 grade Lit teacher went off on a tangent about Catholics not being allowed to read the Bible . She went on to say that a priest had to meet with each Catholic and go over each verse ??? He is usually comfortable defending the faith but she was so aggressive that he just did a slow burn in his seat . I’m grateful that he didn’t speak in anger . But this idea is so alien to me that I don’t know how to defend it . Could you point me in the right direction ?

I did file a complaint with the principle .
