Are Catholics idolatrous?

I was reading an anti-catholic book in which the author claims that the idols that were made in the old testament, such as the golden calf, were not in themselves being worshiped directly by the Jews, but were used as representations of the gods being worshiped. The author explains that this is exactly what “Roman Catholics” do with statues. Is there anything to either back-up this claim or refute it?
