Are certain types of adult consensual porn more immoral than others or are they all equal?

Hi everyone. I have a question about pornography. As many of you know, there are various types of porn that star consenting adults. In particular, there is porn that stars heterosexuals and then there is porn that stars homosexuals. So, I ask, would viewing homosexual porn be considered more immoral than viewing heterosexual porn or would they be equal? Sorry if this is a silly question.

Both have victims (the “porn stars” and the viewer whose sexuality is damaged), and both do not dignify either sexuality, humanity or God. Quite the opposite they damaged the dignity of the porn actor and the viewer, regardless of whether the act is consensual or not.

Well, forgive me for asking such a dumb question then.

Personally, I thought it was a decent question and my own personal opinion is that the homosexual porn is worse because not only is the sin of unchastity committed, the sin of sodomy is also committed.

Well, that’s an interesting point. My thinking is that it’s all mortal sin, which kills the life of God in the soul, so dead is dead, no matter what sins pile up after the first one.

I would say yes, there are various degrees of evil corresponding to pornography.

As far as viewing goes, I’d agree with Betsy, watching porn is watching porn.

There is perhaps an interesting related question, which type of porn is more sinful to make? And, is one necessarily more or less sinful by supporting (i.e.renting or buying) certain types of porn (homosexual, beastial, etc) because it perhaps lead to the making of “more sinful” porn?

I’d argue that it’s splitting hairs.

Yes, that is true, I did not mean that the person was evil, but their actions.

But, while it is no doubt true that masturbation and murder both create a separation from God, I find it hard to think they are equal on a sense of evil. I would be much, much, much more concerned for my hypothetical son’s soul if I found him murdering someone than I would be if I found him masturbating.

I believe that the catechis teaches that even in regards to mortal sin, there are varying degrees of severity. Sort of like first degree murder and manslaughter? Both intristically grave, but in varying degrees

Years ago I saw a doco about the porn industry, and there was a married couple who met during a porn film they did together, and now they produce porn of married couples, for married couples.

When I saw this, I too wondered if one form of porn is worse than the other. I actually think that porn that we could consider “less bad” is a gate way. Like a movie I walked in on once at a student hostel, something about an invisble man and it basically had naked ladies doing rude things to an “invisible man”. Now, there was obviously no sexual intercourse involved in this film but it was implied, and those naked women were engaged in actions that would lead the watcher who had an intention of doign so, to gain sexual pleasure outside the confines of its structure.

All porn is equal in its effect, the only real difference is the physical difference of the porn. Like gay porn, one lady doing an invisible man porn, or some kind of orgy.

Sex is meant for a husband and his wife without interferance from contraception (which half the time is in porn, so add another sin to that!), and certainly not to be exercised for the entertainment of someone else.

No, in fact one could argue that not using PPD in the fornication act could be more of a sin then the act itself. STDs are a very serios issue and you put not only yourself, but others at risk of life changing ailments.

St. Thomas Aquinas though so, but I haven’t seen any modern Catholic theologians make the same argument.

Hell is hell, no matter what method gets you there.

There may be a different level of torment for different sins, but, death in mortal sin gets you in hell.

Best to strive to avoid sin and go to confession OFTEN!

Well, of course, that’s true, that Hell is Hell and mortal sin is mortal sin. But that is not the question at hand. We know what the general punishment is, we are just wondering if there are varying degrees of evil, which I have to say there are.
