Are Catholic Churches required to have the stations of the cross displayed? Could someone provide documentation if the answer is yes. Thank you.

I think that you right. I do love them in a Church however.

They are just one example of the many ways we can come together to pray in our wonderful, expansive and beautiful faith.

Thank you! I wondered when someone would ask. I’d love to discuss, but not on this thread since it’ll get off task (though I think it is a short-lived thread).

I started a new thread in the Water Cooler forum (click here), where I posted the text. Let me see if anyone (yourself included) can provide what you think Frost is saying and I’ll then explain my perspective. Like I say in that thread, I could be wrong (often am), but I don’t think it’s quite the feel-good poem that everyone thinks it is.

Put it this way, I’ve seen plenty of ‘modern’ churches in my time, but can’t recall any offhand that didn’t have the Stations of the Cross, even if not always especially prominent. I have a gut feeling that they are required, but would need to do some research to put my finger on a document that’d say so.

I should also point out that with regard to the Catholic Church trying to encourage the Eastern Catholic Churches to return to their own traditions (like iconography), Stations of the Cross are generally not supposed to be displayed in Eastern Catholic parishes because they are a tradition of the Latin West. (That said, you will still find a number of them that do.)

no they are also not required to display icons or statues of the saints, (I don’t know the rules of the Easter Church so do not address them) or stained glass windows, or carved angel roofs, votive candle stands, banner in liturgical colors, flags, or even pews, or anything other than a clearly distinguished sanctuary, crucifix, altar with candles, tabernacle with light, ambo, presider’s chair, paschal candle, blessed oils, and baptismal font.
