Are communal confessions recognized by the church as a valid form of reconciliation?

Are communal confessions recognized by the church as a valid form of reconciliation? Years ago at a parish we attended, the pastor routinely held communal confessions, but the trend towards these types of confessions was short lived. So, having gone to confession in this way several times, I wonder if they are valid.
