I’m in RCIA and I was told that I could either go to confession during regularly offered hours for my first confession, make an appointment, or attend the upcoming communal penance service. I had my doubts about communal penance services, but maybe they’re misplaced. Are they licit? And as an RCIA candidate, would it have sufficed (I made an appointment) for my first confession?

Hi,

Communal penance services are licit. But parishes have them usually only twice a year. People should be going to Confession a lot more often than that! Once a month is appropriate. I go every two weeks.

Therefore, an RCIA candidate ought to begin by going the way one ordinarily experiences the sacrament, which is to go privately.
