Are ear piercings a sin?

I am considering getting a rook piercing on my ear, I already have a triple piercing on my earlobes. I want to get the rook piercing because I think they look cool, I am hesitant though because I’ve heard that pierced ears are a sin, I am curious because this is not a “traditional” place for pierced ears. Thanks so much for reading my question and thanks in advance for any answers/responses!🙂
 
I don’t think there is a particular church teaching on piercings.

Ear piercings are not intrinsically wrong, so no, the act of getting your ears pierced is not sinful.

On the other hand, you should keep close watch on yourself for the sins of vanity and self-mutilation. Both of these are common sins which arise from such things as ear piercings (especially vanity) and I would suggest you be careful.

In my opinion, if you are getting a piercing for the sole reason that it “looks cool”, is “unique and different from other people”, or “will get you noticed”, then I would avoid that, because that’s vanity.

I understand how thinking wearing anything to “get you noticed” is vain. How is thinking something looks cool or that it is unique being vain?
It is also vain to fix your hair or wear an outfit that you think is “super cute” :hmmm:
 
As your body is a “Temple of the Lord”… I wouldn’t deface it. While it may not be considered a sin-consider that you will have holes in you and you just might leak-hmm:D
 
Or then again, maybe you will be "holier than thou? It’s late and my funny bone is acting up.:);)😛
 
I had a rook piercing when I was a teen, plus 8 other ear piercings. My mom repeatedly said, “You’re gonna wish you hadn’t done that!” She was right. The scars aren’t pretty.

That is ear piercings.

The Church does have some teachings regarding non-ear piercings which are considered sinful, especially regarding the sexual organs.
 
I understand why people have their ears pierced, I will admit, back in my younger days, I had double piercings in both ears, the very first piercing I had was back when I was 13 I believe, this was in the late 80s, when guys only got one ear done, remember when getting one specific ear done denoted you were gay? LOL Of course, now that Im 40 yrs old, I havent worn any earrings for years.

That being said, I do not understand modern piercings, I see so many with their lips, cheeks, eyebrows, etc pierced, I guess its their way of ‘looking cool’, just as one ear was back when I was younger. also,it seems just to have something pierced is not enough, now they have to be HUGE holes, some piercings Ive seen are 2+ inches wide!

People are really getting into some crazy related things, like implants, etc. Ive seen the new thing for some is getting your eyeball tattooed one color, Ive seen a few get black eyes, which is very scary looking, they look demonic, I cant imagine how they will feel when they are 65 yrs old…they will never be able to get a decent job looking like that.

Plus, this makes you wonder what people will be doing in the near future…if its this crazy NOW…whats next?! I mean, what else can they do?

The key words in my post were “for the sole reason”.

If the ONLY reason for you doing something is to attract attention, that’s vanity.

If that is a reason, but an equal reason is that you are conforming with societal norms (e.g. combing your hair, wearing nice clothes at appropriate events, etc) then what you are doing is more likely to be simply “matching the norm”.

Ultimately, it comes down to intention, because one is capable of committing the sin of pride in almost any circumstance, even if the actual action is morally neutral or morally good.

The point of my previous post was to indicate that one good way to determine whether one is committing a sin of vanity is to examine whether one’s intention is “for the sole reason” of bringing attention to one’s self.

Hopefully that makes sense.
