This might seem a silly question but given that the Eastern Church, both Catholic and otherwise, has a different theology to the west I was wondering how far this spills over into moral teach and to what extent Eastern Catholics are obliged to listen to the decrees of Rome?

For example, are eastern Catholics expected not to use contraception as we are in the western tradition and is that a belief that is actively taught by eastern Catholic Priests and Bishops?

Humanae Vitae is binding on all Catholics.

Even the Orthodox consider permitting contraception economia, not per se a good idea.

The Catholics of Eastern Rite Churches with whom I have had contact are anti-sin, but pro-life.

Yes. While the Orthodox position on contraception varies from priest to priest (the Orthodox priest who was at the parish I used to attend said that it was a private matter between a couple and their spiritual advisor, and that there was no firm stance on the issue in the Church, because no Council had addressed it, ever), all Eastern Catholics are bound to be faithful to the Magisterium and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Contraception is not a matter of discipline, it is a matter of basic morality. In other words, it is not like eating meat on a Lenten Friday, it is sin because it is inherently sinful.

Although the various catholic churches differ on liturgy and much subtle theological perpsectives, it would be nonsensical to claim unity if there were disagreement on a matter of inherent morality.

The EO, on the other hand, I can’t speak for. I don’t really understand their approach to the subject.
