Are Eastern Catholics "Roman Catholic"?

I am a Syrian Catholic, but in all official records I am a Roman Catholic. We should know that there are several individual churches within the Roman Catholic Church which are all under the jurisdiction of the Pope in Vatican. This is the rich diversity within the Catholic Church. This is maintained mainly for the reason that people belonging to different cultures should experience the Catholic faith in theirown local cultures and traditions. Why did St.Paul write different type of letters to different communities? He was trying to give Jesus to all of them in their own traditions. So this diversity in the Catholic church is very ancient and well accepted by all. We are all Roman Catholics, at the same time we experience Jesus in different traditions, that is all.
Thanks,
JK

Hi everyone

Sorry to be a bore, but “Roman Catholic” is not the correct term for a member of the Latin rite Church. The correct term is “Latin rite Catholic”.

Although it is - sadly - sometimes even used by the Church itself, the phrase “Roman Catholic” has its roots as a disparraging term used by protestants, who wanted to pretend that we are not “The Catholic Church”, but instead something called “The Roman Catholic Church”.

Protestants (especially Anglicans/Episcopalians) like to pretend we are “Roman Catholics” (as opposed to just “Catholics”) because its part of their pretence that we are all just different types of Catholics - as opposed to Catholics and Protestants.

The point of their pretence is to allow them to place their man-made church on a par with the Church which Christ Himself founded. But their organisations are not on a par with Christs Church - indeed they are not even churches to start with.

Catholic means universal. It is a nonsense to place a qualifier or adjective in front of the word universal. Something is either universal or it is not, there are no degrees of universality.

Regardless of what rite we belong to, we should only ever refer to ourselves as “Catholics”.

Althought this is something I agree with, you are aware Latin was also a offensive term given by muslims correct?

This. Plus before the Eastern rites came into communion with Rome, we Latins always identified as Catholic or Church of Rome. So Roman Catholic does not contradict that term.
Churches. I can’t stress this enough. Rites are patrimonies, Churches are entities. If the only thing that matters is how we worship I should go around asking my Roman friends if they are Missale Romanum Catholics. That sounds absurd because it is. 😦

Read question and answer 20 in the Catechism of St. Pius X :–

Just stop, with this nonsense. This nonsense is dishonest; and doesn’t account for the diversity within the Catholic Union.

Even if we were to use the notion, by Roman we are in communion with the Bishop of Rome, there’s still some clarification needed, for such a statement.

Why do people need to have a sense of uniformity. What’s so harmful in saying I’m a Ukrainian Catholic; I’m a Ruthenian Catholic; I’m a Russian Catholic; I’m a Coptic Catholic; I’m a Chaldean Catholic, plugging in Roman, Greek, or Syriac after the first word

If Martial Arts Styles, and Systems are defined by their techniques, then by no means do we practice the same techniques; utilize the same theological vantage points; nor, do we have the same attitudes towards such practices.

So this blanket statement of the Catholic Church being Roman is assinine, assieleven, and assitwelve.

I am just saying what Popes have said . I accept their terminology before yours .

Well, the fact is that Rome herself has shifted positions on the matter. There was a time that Rome was the mother and mistress of all Churches. Then in the last century or so on the Dignity of the Oriental Churches, it is said that all Churches and all Rites are of equal dignity. I can’t blame petronus for his position because the Church has taught as much in the past.

When I use the word Roman , and Popes have used the same word , it is not a reference to a rite .

Yes all Catholic rites are of equal dignity .

The word Roman is used of the Church to show that it is the Church which is in communion with the See of Rome , with the Bishop of Rome . In this sense it is not referring to rites but to unity with the bishop who has the specific charism granted to Peter .

Maybe you should look at the wider reality outside of the document you are reading. For a time Rome was in isolation, and to refer to itself as Roman was accurate in that there were no other Patriarchal Churches in communion with her, thus all Churches were indeed Roman. Today’s reality is different after the various unions has come to pass over the last 500 years or so. Roman wouldn’t be applicable today.

So what would be the applicable term?
