I have heard that Luther or Luder means the Beast in Arabic. Was Martin Luther the Antichrist?

In one word NO

However he was a poor misguided soul who led countless Christians in the west into heresy, who’s legacy remains very strongly with us to this day.

I suppose a better answer would be to ask you to find out yourself. Go take a look at what he created, the lutheren denomination, from an unbiased view, and ask yourself if this is God’s work or satan’s.

A house divided against itself cannot stand.

Truly evil… NO

Misguided… Yes

Mentally unstable… relatively

Sinfull… yes, aren’t we all?

Wrong? Yes

Frustrated with some of the corruption of certain Church authorites?YES

Justified in his actions… no, but he thought he was

Do I sympathize and pity him? Yes

Do I agree with his teachings, Not for a second!

Take care when you hear that “antichrist” stuff. Don’t believe everything coming down the pipeline. Sure, many denominations call Catholics horrible names, but we must be stronger and more compassionate than that.

I’m a convert from Lutheranism and I see no reason or anything to be gained by giving this assertion the time of day.

To paint all Lutherans as evil or Luther as the anti-Christ certainly isn’t accurate and won’t do much good for world peace. I am sure you don’t appreciate it when some protestants(not Lutherans) say the Pope is the anti-Christ.

DOXA probably doesn’t care as he/she is Orthodox. 😉

Luther means “lute maker”. Today, anyone who makes guitars, banjos, etc, is called a ‘luthier’. (Original spelling).
My grandfather’s name was Luther. Like the rest of the family, he was musical. That is the meaning of the word.

DOXA,

To answer the question in your title, I would say no more so or less so than Catholics in general. To answer the question in the text about Martin Luther personally, I would have to ask first what you mean by antichrist. If you are going with I John 2:18-22, then I would say that yes he did leave the Church, but no he did not deny the Father and the Son. If you are going with the beasts in Revelation (which I guess you are since you capitalized the word, although the word “antichrist” doesn’t appear in Revelation), then I would say absolutely not.

Hi, Zooey,

😃

I usually leap to Luther’s defense, but I’m too busy being
“heretical” on other threads, to jump in here. 🤓

“Evil” ??? Are Lutheran Protestants Evil? [thread title]

I’m too weary to take this on.

Best wishes,

anti christ means he is against Christ. Luther was not against Christ. Luther just want to make a name in the history so he separated in the CC.

Interesting converstaion.

I just found it fascinating that someone’s name would mean something else in another language which could describe them as being someone who was against the Church (ie. anti-Church=anti-Christ).

Anyway, I know that Luther was not an antichrist or the Antichrist but did seem misguided. And it would not be right to call Luther or Lutherans antichristians either. I find that there are many fundamentalist around in all faiths.

Mormonism in fact, I was told by a guy in the IBS, had an impossible mission of converting people in China since MORMON means the Devil or a Demon in Chinese. They had to change their organisation’s name in China order to be accepted.

Jesus said “Treat others as you would want them to treat you” and “Do not judge in order not to be judged.” I guess there is a good lesson to be learnt in all of this.

DOXA,

A secular example of this came when Chevrolet tried to market its small Nova car in South America. Unfortunately for them, “no va” (two words) is Spanish for “doesn’t go” or “doesn’t work.” Whoops!

No, not at all. Luther had some valid points- but took things a bit far and was excommunicated. There are some great things about Lutheranism ( I was baptized and raised a Lutheran)
But the church should be one.(Catholic)

A bizarre question.

Lutherans have left Luther way behind. If you read his writings you will find he was not just misguided, but deranged as well. Or would it be better to say he was unhinged by times?

His anti-semitism would warm the heart of a skin head, and his unwillingness to take the leadership he had been given and condemn the raping of nuns and the rampages of those purporting to be his followers was un-Christian by any standard, Reform or otherwise. His admonitions to “sin boldly” when he was on a drunk are not the teachings of Lutherans today.

All this to say that Luther is almost irrelevant to who Lutherans are today, other than as a symbol.

Are Lutherans evil? I have no reason to think so.

The question posed by the title of this thread is inherently offensive; merely in being asked, it suggests “Yes” is a possible answer to the query. Such a generalization would flaunt the rule of charity that is incumbent on those of the Judeo-Christian tradition, the rules of this forum aside.

This thread is closed. Thanks to all who have participated.
