Hi, my husband had a vasectomy a few years ago because we did not want anymore kids. We did not know any better back then and confessed of that. I am now wondering what the Church teaches in a situation like this when it comes to marital rights. Are we allowed or not? We haven’t been intimate with each other for quite some time because I take it as a sin since I can still conceive and would be based purely on physical needs. What is the correct answer?

Thank you!

Dear friend,

The Church does not require that a man who has had a vasectomy have reversal surgery–nor does it require that he be celibate for the rest of his life. He does need to confess this ans receive absolution, if he hasn’t already. You and you husband may have marital relations.
