Out Priest talked about how marriages might be invalid, and asked those compoles, basically, to ask themselves certain questions. One of them as if they were going to have children. Are married people expected to have children? What if your in sever poverty, can’t afford a kid, and want tog et married?

your not expected to “have” kids just be “open” to them.

When you get married, you are expected to be open to life. Meaning, no marital act should be rendered fruitless.

If you get married with the reservation that you don’t intend to have children, then the intention is defective, and the marriage invalid.

Poverty has never been an impediment to marriage. But if you’re poor and still want to get married, then do so with the same dispositions as those who are not poor: open to life. I would trust in marriage’s being a sacrament and the grace that comes with it.

If you cannot reasonbly be certain that you can support children, and plan not to have any, then do not get married.

The prime purposes of marriage are procreation and unity. This two may NEVER be separated.

One of the two purposes of Marriage is to produce children. All couples are to be open to new life and not do anything artificial to prevent Conception. They may abstain form sexual relations if circumstances require this. But to enter into Marriage with the intention of never having any children would invalidate the Marriage.

Hi Emly,

One of the reasons for declaring a marriage null and void is “exclusio prolis” ( the exclusion of children). This means that you go into a marriage with the firm intention of never having children.

So, as said above, you have to be open to having children. This does not mean you have to have them right away or that you can’t wait until you’re better off. It just means that you don’t “exclude” them.

Severe poverty has never been a barrier to children. In fact, poor people seem to be much more open to having children these days than rich people. And scripture seems to suggest that those parents and their children have fewer obstacles to getting to heaven too.

Serious question: what exactly is the point of getting married if both people are adamant about not having children?

I think because, “It is not good for the man to be alone.” Even if someone doesn’t want children, they still feel things that go with this statement from Genesis. This leads to a desire for marriage.
